rich chocolate pudding

by Heather

I’ve been a sweet-aholic this pregnancy.  Actually, I’ve gone through a few different craving stages – bacon, honey whole wheat toast with butter, cereal, and now anything sweet.  Chocolate being one of my favorites.  It was no surprise to myself that when selecting a recipe from my secret recipe club pick, I headed straight to the dessert section and found rich chocolate pudding.

Angels Homestead was my secret blog for this month.  I love how April is frugal minded and shared her meal plans each week.  It’s always fun to see what other people are planning to make each week – and what works for their family.

Homemade pudding has actually been on my list of things to make, so this recipe came at the perfect time.  The ingredient list is short – just 5 normal ingredients.  Very different than the packaging of boxed pudding.  The actually cooking of the pudding took a bit longer than I though it would have, and I didn’t whisk the entire time, leaving me with random little lumps in the pudding.  Next time I’ll turn the heat up more, and whisk the entire time.  Also, the pudding is left with a little skin on top.  It’s edible, just not appealing.  I think I’ve read that if you place some plastic wrap on top it won’t leave the pudding skin layer.  Does anyone have experience with that?  Even with little lumps and skin, the pudding was divine!

Rich Chocolate Pudding

recipe from Angels Homestead

Ingredients

  • 1 cup natural cane sugar
  • ½ cup baking cocoa
  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 4 cups whole milk

Directions

  1. In a heavy saucepan, whisk sugar, cocoa, flour and salt.
  2. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Boil and continually whisk for 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Spoon into individual serving dishes and chill until set.

April, thanks for helping me cross pudding off the list!  It is most definitely better than boxed pudding.  Hunter approved of it too.

Jacob however, didn’t even try it.  Boo!  Had it been boxed pudding I’m sure he would have devoured it.  Oh well, more for me!  Yes… I ate all of it.  We’ll say it’s because of the baby. 🙂

Yum, you did a fabulous job on the pudding Heather. As for the lumps, unfortunately you have to stir the pudding constantly as it cooks to prevents this, one of the drawbacks of homemade pudding. Your right about the plastic wrap right on top of the pudding as it chills, that is the only way I know of preventing the skin from forming. My hungry bunch doesn’t mind the skin, so I don’t worry about it. Thanks for choosing this recipe, I haven’t made it in awhile, and need to soon. Happy Reveal Day!

That looks great. And April is right, if you place a piece of plastic wrap right on the hot pudding, it helps to prevent the skin from forming, and then you get to lick the plastic wrap. Or maybe I’m the only one who does that? At any rate this looks great. Makes me realize I need to post my recipe for homemade chocolate pudding soon. You just gave a craving…

I have a really hard time with pudding, even though I love it. I haven’t made it in a long time though, so maybe I will have to try again with your recipe!

I’m a sucker for anything chocolate.. okay, most things chocolate. I don’t think I could do those chocolate covered insects.. Anyway, this looks absolutely delish!

I do know that when you put plastic wrap over it you need to make sure it touches the pudding.. can’t just be sealing off the container.. does that make sense? 🙂

I love your comment about this pudding having five simple ingredients, versus supermarket pudding having a million. Isn’t it amazing!? Way to go whisking something over the stove. I’m impressed! Looks delicious.

I haven’t made homemade chocolate pudding in ages…now you’ve got me craving it! I refuse to buy the boxed version anymore….can you believe there’s red food coloring in chocolate pudding? Ridiculous. Not to mention all the other junk. Homemade is BEST!
p.s. My husband probably wouldn’t have tasted it either…..he hates pudding.
