I last shared what I’ve been sewing as part of my DIYed Christmas at the end of the year. Since then I’ve made many more garments. I’m excited to share them with you guys! Kids Clothes Week seems to get me on a roll with coming up with sewing ideas. Since that week (at the end of January) I’ve been continuing on with my sewing streak. Here’s what I’ve been up to on the sewing front.
baby pants
So-so many baby pants! They come together pretty quickly and I can make them how I want them to look. I love harem pants and had already made a couple different ones for Hunter, so I decided to work on drafting and shrinking the pattern I had for Hunter down so baby girl can have them too. Harem AKA parachute pants are perfect for big cloth diaper butts, so I think these will work out great. Here’s my first pair I made, as a test for the pattern.
I up-cycled an old but barely worn shirt of mine for the material – dark grey thin knit with some stretch in it.
After I made that first pair I was ready! Next I got even more creative and added the custom carrots all over this up-cycled shirt fabric. It’s just white cotton with not much stretch, but made into something new with the citrasolv carrot transfer.
My final pair of harem pants are my favorites. Soft black interlock fabric – so it’s a bit thicker than the other up-cycled shirt fabrics and still has some stretch. I added cuffs to the bottom which is much easier than hemming itty bitty leg holes.
I also made Hunter a matching pair of harems with the same fabric.
Dog hair is inevitable in our house. :/
Two more pairs of baby pants. These basic newborn pants (free pattern + tutorial) in this fun yellow and leaf flannel.
Lastly, these flannel shorts. They are supposed to be 1-3 months in size, but they look much bigger (at least 6-9 months). The sides of the shorts have elastic to give it a scrunched look. Simplicity vintage baby pattern 1813a if you’re interested.
hats/hoodies
This free baby bonnet pattern came together in a snap! I used the same flannel material as the last shorts along with a very light grey soft cotton and polyester blend fabric (I believe) for the lining.
Hunter also got a head warmer in the form of a hoodie-scarf. Or what was supposed to be a scarf. I think I made a mistake on the fabric calculation because it turned into a cowl/cape instead of a scarf. It was my first time adding ears to any type of hat – so fun!
I do still need to add a snap where the safety pin is. Maybe I’ll do that today. 🙂 Flannel + the same light grey I used in the bonnet above.
dresses
I was at a store a couple months ago and spotted this dress by Carter’s. I loved it, and instantly thought, I can make that!
So I did!
Lucky for me I already had an almost exact match to the stripped fabric on hand. Using the geranium dress pattern (I love this pattern) I made my own in a 3-6 months size. I made the dress a bit shorter than the pattern called for just so it wouldn’t be long and in the way of little baby legs.
These next two dresses were actually for my friend’s two little girls – more geranium dresses! I think I’ve made 6 of them now. Wow.
Hunter gear
Lastly, some Hunter gear. These slippers. Most sewing is fun. These were not. While they look cute, even with the many mistakes I made throughout, they were such a challenge! I followed this tutorial.
They are made with flannel on the outside and lined with faux sherpa, so super cozy and warm. I have to say though, I couldn’t believe my slippers showed up on the kid’s clothes week wrap up post! Totally worth it to make them. 🙂
The last item I’ve sewn (I actually drafted the pattern myself and made it during our recent snow days) was this waffle shirt for Hunter. I used an old but barely worn waffle shirt of mine (top left photo) and turned it into a nice fitted long sleeve shirt for Hunter. There’s a bit of extra length in the sleeves and shirt, so it should last a little while as he continues to grow.
I cannot wait to make more of these for him! He has a couple of store bought waffle shirts and they are just so wide and loose on him. Not a great fit for a slender kiddo. I just love that I can customize the fit. Bonus for using clothing I wasn’t wearing anyways.
So much sewing, so much fun (well, except those slippers….). I’ve been taking advantage of my extra time lately since I know soon I’ll be preoccupied with a new baby to snuggle (any day now!). I do have 2 items I want to make for myself (a button up tank top + slouchy cardigan) and a cardigan for baby girl. They’ll be matchy cardigans in mustard yellow… I cannot wait. 🙂
I really worked on using up fabric from my stash or up-cycling old clothes to keep the cost down. The only fabric I actually purchased was the black that was used for the matching harem pants and cuffs + collar for Hunter’s shirt.
What have you been crafting lately? If you sew for kiddos, what’s your favorite pattern? My current top 3 are harem pants, geranium dresses and this new long sleeve shirt pattern I made. Probably because I feel confident making them!
Have a great Wednesday!
Heather

You’re ridiculous talented!!!!
Very impressive! Lots of cute stuff. Great job!
You’ve made so many cute things! The Carter’s look-alike dress is adorable and those slippers are amazing. I love them!
You are very handy! That almost last photo of Hunter in that hat made me melt!
SO impressed! Where do you get your patterns from?
Which ones are you wondering about? I believe I linked to all the tutorials I used and the pattern I’ve purchased online. The paper pattern I picked up at Joann’s and some patterns I self drafted too 🙂
Thanks! I’ll click through the links. Love those harem pants… too cute!

Hi, I love your blog. I have also used that little dress pattern for the dress on my blog! 🙂 I also made that cute little hat that you made, it was fun to make – I have made two so far and hope to make more. I used a thin fleese blanket which I cut up for the lining! Cheaper than buying by the meter – just bought one on sale at one of the local stores. Keep up the good work.
Did you link to the pattern you used for the harem pants? I’m dying to make some for my niece!!
Sorry I drafted the small ones myself and altered the larger ones from a pattern for Hunter. The pattern I originally started making them from is this one… but it looks like the site is down now 🙁 http://www.suburbia-soup.com/2013/05/harem-sareoul-mc-hammer-you-call-it.html
