You may remember from a little while back the book tour I took part in for between interruptions. Well thanks to TLC book tours I’m joining in on another. A very different type of book though…

Skinny Bitch

Skinny Bitch Book of Vegan Swap

I was already familiar with the SB books, but not through the original book. Nope, when I first found out I was pregnant I saw Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven at the library and grabbed it up. I read through just about every page during a weekend away at the beach. It was educational and kept me drawn in with their sassy attitudes. BUT, it didn’t convert me to a vegan. Still, it was an enjoyable read.

When the opportunity to read through another SB book came up I jumped on it.

Skinny Bitch Book of Vegan Swaps is much different than a book you sit down and read through. It’s more of a guide for new vegans on what to buy at the grocery store. Kim Barnouin goes into crazy detail on just about everything you can buy at the grocery store.  She tells you which cheeses, cereals, prepared meals, beers… you name it to buy, vegan.  She really did covered everything in there.

She also gives a guide to shops all over the US of places to actually find these foods, vegan friend restaurants (I so want to check out the one in Portland now!!), and shares how to spot animal products on labels. Kim also lists out a handful of her favorite recipes to get you going.

What I didn’t like about this is all the non-real food. I get that she’s showing new vegans what to swap instead of what they used buy, but the lists of foods seem quite processed. I’ve looked at labels for ‘cheese’ products before and they are much much longer than those of actual cheese. I’d prefer to just eat the real food, but that’s just me!

For all the vegans out there, or anyone looking for an animal product free substitute, this is a great book. It is very comprehensive and thorough. It’ll be a good book to have around for those times I do want to know what a good substitute for a certain product is. I really do enjoy eating vegan foods, I just like my meat too. 🙂

Have you read any of the SB books?  What’s your favorite vegan swap?

Note: I received a copy of Skinny Bitch Book of Vegan Swaps through TLC Book Tours. You can check out the rest of the tour here.

  1. I couldn’t stand SB – it made people (even me!) feel terrible about what they eat and was completely 1-sided. It took everything to the extreme. A vegan “guide” however, sounds much more appealing to me!

  2. I haven’t read any of the books, but am familiar with them. My fav vegan swap is a chia or flax egg. I use this swap all the time when baking!

  3. Sounds like a great book. We admit we never read the first Skinny Bitch book, we heard a lot about it but never got around to reading it ourselves, guess other books took priority haha

  4. I’m definitely not a vegan but I do have a child who is allergic to milk (among many other things) so some of these swaps might be helpful to me.

Thanks for giving this book a chance and being a part of the tour!
