Acai Ice Cream

Açaí ice cream

I’ve been making homemade banana nice cream for years now, and I can’t see myself getting sick of it.

It’s such a simple, and healthier way to enjoy ice cream at home (no ice cream machine needed!)!

And if you’re like me, where traditional dairy-filled ice cream doesn’t leave you feeling great, you’ll notice a huge difference in how you feel after enjoying this vegan ice cream.

All you need for açaí ice cream are frozen bananas, açaí powder (freeze dried and blended açaí berries), and a little milk.

We love serving it with homemade granola for a little crunch, but it’s perfect on its own as well!

Freeze dried organic Acai powder

Açaí powder

In our recipe today we’re using freeze-dried organic Açaí Powder from Perfect Supplements!

I love that it’s easy to store in my pantry, instead of taking up space in my freezer.

I can easily add it to açaí ice cream, smoothies, yogurt bowls, or snack balls.

It adds beautiful purple color to our soft serve ice cream, along with loads of antioxidants.

Açaí is considered a superfood not only because of its antioxidant content, but also because it includes essential vitamins and minerals like iron and calcium, omega fatty acids 3, 6, and 9, dietary fiber, and amino acids.

My motto of adding more goodness fits well with açaí!

how to make Acai ice cream

What you’ll need for this açaí ice cream recipe

How to make acai ice cream

  1. Start by freezing your bananas (if not already frozen). Take 3 ripe bananas, peel, and slice them into 1-2 inch pieces. Lay the banana pieces on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Place in the freezer and allow the banana to fully freeze. The bananas will take about 2 hours to freeze.
  2. When the banana pieces are frozen, it’s time to make açaí ice cream! Place the frozen banana pieces in a food processor and pulse a few times to begin to break them down. After that, turn the food processor on and allow it to run for 30-60 seconds, breaking the banana down. It will look kind of stuck right about then.
  3. Add in the açaí powder and 2 tbsp of milk (up to 3). Turn the food processor back on, and let it run for 30-60 seconds. Scrape down the side and break up any chunks that get stuck – we want smooth nice cream! Continue to process until you are left with smooth, creamy açaí ice cream. You can use it right away, or place it in a loaf pan lined with parchment paper and freeze to make it a little more solid and scoopable.
  4. Serve and enjoy with homemade granola!

Can you double this recipe?

Absolutely you can double this no added sugar acai ice cream recipe!

The one thing to consider is the size of your food processor. The larger the food processor, the easier it will be to double the recipe.

I wouldn’t triple it though, as it becomes hard to get a creamier ice cream and an even blend of the bananas with a huge amount going at once.

Favorite toppings for acai bowls

Acai berry ice cream is thick and creamy, and the perfect base for a healthy bowl!

There are so many great ways to top your bowl. Here are some favorite toppings for it:

  • Cocoa nibs or cacao nibs
  • Fresh fruit like wild blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, and pineapples (really any fruity blast will do!)
  • Nuts likes diced almonds, pecans, walnuts, peanuts
  • Seeds like chia seed, hemp hearts, flaxseed, sunflower seed and pumpkin seed
  • Shredded coconut
  • A drizzle your favorite nut or seed butter (hello healthy fats that add so much flavor!)
  • Homemade granola (this hemp granola is fantastic with it!)
  • A squirt of lemon juice for a tart pop
