Easy Tree Shaped Christmas Hot Cocoa Bombs Recipe

I love gifting homemade goodies around the holiday and these stunning individual tree hot cocoa bombs are my latest obsession!

They are much easier to make compared to the half spheres you may have seen before, and look 100% more like chocolate decorations!

Plus, you have the added option to include chocolate collagen in your hot chocolate bombs. While totally optional, it’s added nourishment that gives that extra special touch and tells someone you care.

When it’s time to indulge, just drop one of these delicious hot chocolate bombs into a cup of your favorite hot milk and watch the magic happen.

As the chocolate melts away, a swirl of mini marshmallows and a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix turn your mug into a perfect cup of hot chocolate.

Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

Making hot chocolate bombs is a winter-season activity both my kids and I love. Last year, we threw on our favorite Christmas movies and went to town! I made the molds, and then the little ones each got to fill and decorate their own set, customizing them to their hearts’ content.

Consider this recipe for hot chocolate bombs a jumping-off point, then have fun making them your own! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Go Dairy-Free/Vegan – Use your favorite vegan-friendly dark or milk chocolate and hot chocolate mix, then use plant-based warm milk for a dairy-free twist.
  • Make Different Shapes – Start with traditional hot chocolate balls, then add candy eyes, a red nose (like an M&M), and some pretzel antlers to make a reindeer. Or, use white chocolate, then add candy eyes, a candy corn nose, and drips of dark chocolate for a snowman. You can also add a rolo candy on top to turn round hot chocolate balls into Christmas ornaments.
  • Try Different Flavors – When it comes to hot chocolate bomb flavors, the sky is the limit. Use different flavors of instant cocoa mix, make your own strawberry hot chocolate or chia hot chocolate mix, or blitz your favorite chocolate bars in a food processor to make your own. You can also go super simple and add a sprinkle of cinnamon for warmth, or crushed candy canes to make peppermint hot chocolate bombs.
  • Use Color & Pizzazz – There are so many ways to make these Christmas-themed hot chocolate bombs. Try using green chocolate (melted white chocolate dyed with gel food coloring or matcha) to make Grinch hot cocoa bombs. Paint on edible glitter. Use lightbulb or star-shaped sprinkles to decorate your trees. Seriously friends — just have fun with it!

Serving Suggestions

These tree-shaped cocoa bombs are the perfect vehicle for holiday cheer and togetherness. Here are a few fun ways to use them:

  • Edible Gifts: There is nothing quite like the joy of giving (and receiving) homemade edible gifts during the holidays. Pack these cocoa bombs in a cute, festive box or a clear cellophane bag tied with a ribbon. Add a personalized tag with instructions on how to enjoy them. They make perfect gifts for teachers, coworkers, neighbors, or anyone who deserves a little extra warmth this holiday season.
  • DIY Hot Cocoa Bar: Create a memorable experience for your holiday guests with a serve-yourself situation! Set up a table with a variety of these cocoa bombs, alongside mugs, hot milk, and additional toppings like whipped cream, sprinkles, candy canes, and cinnamon sticks.
  • Morning Delight: For a festive morning, add one of these chocolatey tree-shaped bombs to a cup of hot coffee. As it melts, it will turn your plain cuppa joe into a delicious mocha, perfect for staying cozy while pepping up for the day.
  • Children’s Hot Cocoa Party: Organize a fun and interactive children’s party where the centerpiece is the hot cocoa bomb experience. Kids will be thrilled to pick their bomb and watch as it dissolves into a magical chocolate drink. Add holiday-themed cookies and storytelling for a magical afternoon they won’t soon forget.

Recipe Success Tips

  • Don’t skimp on chocolate. You want the exterior shell to be nice and sturdy to hold all the goodies you pack inside. If you have a substantial amount of extra chocolate left over, wait for the current layer to harden, then paint on another.
  • Wear gloves. You don’t want the heat from your hands to leave smudges on the shiny exterior!

How do hot chocolate bombs work?

Hot chocolate bombs are like a little magic trick for your mug! Imagine a hollow tree of chocolate, filled with goodies like cocoa mix and marshmallows. When you’re ready for some cozy deliciousness, just plop one of these chocolate bombs into a mug of hot milk or water.

As the chocolate shell melts away, it reveals a burst of cocoa mix and marshmallows, swirling into the liquid to create a creamy, dreamy cup of hot chocolate.

Do you put hot chocolate bombs in water or milk?

Hot chocolate bombs work wonderfully with both milk and water, but it really depends on how rich and creamy you want your hot cocoa to be.

Dropping one into a hot cup of milk (dairy or plant-based) will give you an extra indulgent experience. On the other hand, using hot water will make a lighter cup of cocoa that’s still super yummy.

How should they be stored?

Storing hot chocolate bombs is a breeze! Keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or any heat source. Room temperature if fine as long as it’s not too warm.

If your kitchen runs warm, you can pop them in the fridge. Just make sure they’re in an airtight container or a sealed bag to keep out moisture (which can cause the chocolate to “bloom”), wayward food smells (like garlic and onions), and critters.
