my pregnancy: week 34

by Heather

I think the days of me starting out my weekly pregnancy posts with “I can’t believe it’s already been a week!” are now gone. Loooooonnggg gone. This week went by so slow.
So slow like my brain before coffee.

Maybe it’s because I was looking forward to no events this weekend and just relaxation time with the hubs. Or maybe it’s because I’m getting close and closer to my due date. Whatever it is, I did not like it!

I had my first baby shower on Sunday, which I’ll share pictures from very soon. Got some very cute gifts and had a great time. One out of three down!

At 34 weeks, let’s see how Hunter’s growing along.

Your baby now weighs about 4 ¾ pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. His fat layers — which will help regulate his body temperature once he’s born — are filling him out, making him rounder. His skin is also smoother than ever.

His central nervous system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well. If you’ve been nervous about preterm labor, you’ll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies. — from babycenter

Reading that our little cantaloupe would probably be just fine if he came now is reassuring. Not that I really think he’ll be making a debut any day soon.

I had a midwife appointment last Friday and my growth was right back on track. At 32 weeks I measured 31 cm, then at 34 weeks I was at 33 cm. His heart rate was spot on and he’s still head down – what a good boy!

I’ve definitely felt more pressure on my stomach this week. When he moves from his back being on my left side to right in the middle, it’s insane how much more my stomach stretches.

Luckily, I still have no stretch marks. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Sleep has been kind of odd. Half the week went like this… I’d fall asleep, not wake up until 4am or 5am to pee, then not be able to sleep. And that started over the weekend when I should be able to sleep in! Those 4 consecutive days were rough.

Then I went back to waking up once or twice at night, and having trouble getting up when my alarm went off. It’s like one way or the other!

That first morning when I woke up at 4am my bladder was really full, and I was having my first semi painful contraction. My entire belly was rock hard like it is with BH contractions, but this time I felt what reminded me a bit of cramps. It lasted about 20-30 seconds then went away and never came back. That was on Saturday and it hasn’t happened again, so no signs of labor coming this way… yet.

My emotions have been a bit wacky, which probably has something to do with the odd sleep. I had a day filled with tears over stupid stuff. Once the tears started I just couldn’t perk up. When that happens, I know I just won’t feel back to normal until I sleep it off, which is what happened. The next day I was back to normal (which coincidentally was when I went back to waking up once or twice and having trouble getting up). Sleep and emotions are so intertwined it’s nuts.

Fitness this week was pretty mellow, nothing out of the ordinary to report. Here’s how it went down:

Saturday – 20 minute walk with Jacob + Joe

Sunday – rest day

Monday – 40 minute walk with Jacob + Joe

Tuesday – 60 minute water aerobics

Wednesday – taught 60 minute body pump

Thursday – taught 50 minute cycle

Friday – 20 minute walk with Joe

My sweet tooth is absolutely out of control. Those big chocolate chip pretzel cookies did not last long, and I’m pretty sure I ate all but one. Plus a lot of ice cream… and chocolate chips by the handful… and yummy mango coconut bread I’ll be sharing soon.

The other night I told Jacob that I just need to stop eating sweets after dinner. I just can’t stop and it’s getting very much out of control. I’ve definitely allowed myself to be more lax with eating during pregnancy, and seeing my weight go up hasn’t been too hard (although I have those days sometimes I do not like it…), but now I’ve gotten to the point where I begin to crave it, like I can’t control it. So no more sweets at night. I’m just limiting them to the afternoons or anytime before dinner when I can eat just one, not a ton.

And on a lighter note, I got this funny new app on my phone called wee mail. Every day I get a new message from a little wee man. They’re pretty funny. 🙂

Random bits

  • How far along: 35 weeks, 2 days
  • Total weight gained: 37 pounds
  • Number of days to go: 34
  • Number of days I’ve been pregnant: 246
  • Number of cloth diapers we now have: 4 (3 newborn + 1 one-size-fits-all)
  • Braxton-hicks contractions: still an every day thing, and they definitely last a long time when I have them

I hope to get my pregnancy page all updated this weekend to make it easier finding old posts and weekly updates.

What are you up to this weekend?

Jacob and I are getting some nice relaxation time in… babymoon????

As your third trimester progresses, you may be getting gassier. Anxiety just makes those gassy feelings worse — you tend to swallow more air when you’re stressed — so try this tension tamer: Breathe deeply through your nose and out through your mouth for a minute or two each day.
