Sweet potato smoothie

Even during the winter, smoothies still make an appearance in my life. Smoothies are so magical. You can load them up with so much good stuff, it’s hard to not like them!

This particular smoothie has cinnamon and ginger in it, which are the perfect warming spices to add in. They go so well with the mashed sweet potato.

We’re also adding extra veggies in the form of frozen cauliflower rice – a great way to sneak more veggies in!

Fat and fiber thanks to the almond butter and chia seeds.

Protein from the protein powder.

Balanced goodness in a cup!

What protein powder should you use?

This sweet potato protein smoothie calls for a vanilla protein powder. I love this particular brand of bovine protein powder because it is a complete protein with minimal ingredients.

Vanilla whey protein powder works well too!

You could use an unsweetened protein, just know it won’t have much sweetness since there is no fruit in this smoothie.

You could also use a plant-based protein powder like this brown rice protein powder to keep this recipe vegan.

Best way to prep mashed sweet potato

There are a few different ways to prep your sweet potato for this sweet potato smoothie. My favorite is to peel it, cube it, and then steam it until fork tender. Then you can easily mash it up!

You can also roast whole sweet potatoes, then mash the flesh.

Another super simple option is to use canned mashed sweet potato. If you open a can and have leftover mashed sweet potato make a batch of sweet potato ice cream with it!

Any option that results in cooked sweet potatoes will do!

Substitutions

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that are great options in this delicious sweet potato smoothie recipe. If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Sweet potato – Mashed pumpkin and mashed butternut squash are great alternatives for a lower-carb option.

Almond milk – Use your favorite non-dairy or dairy milk here. I used unsweetened plain almond milk, but vanilla almond milk, cashew milk, or creamy coconut milk would be lovely too!

Frozen cauliflower rice – Frozen cauliflower florets will work. If you want to not use cauliflower but would like an extra vegetable, blend in some spinach instead.

Almond butter – Use your favorite nut or seed butter as a substitute.

Chia seed – Flax seed or hemp seeds or hemp hearts would work too!

Vanilla protein powder – Read above for specific brands of substitutes. You can always omit the protein powder too, it would reduce the protein and sweetness in the smoothie. To add a touch of sweetness, add a little bit of maple syrup.

Cinnamon and ginger – Try pumpkin pie spice instead! You can even add extra cinnamon with pumpkin spice too for extra flavor.
