Sweet potato smoothie

Even during the winter, smoothies still make an appearance in my life. Smoothies are so magical. You can load them up with so much good stuff, it’s hard to not like them!

This particular smoothie has cinnamon and ginger in it, which are the perfect warming spices to add-in. They go so well with the mashed sweet potato.

We’re also adding in extra veggies in the form of frozen cauliflower rice!

Fat and fiber thanks to the almond butter and chia seeds.

Protein from the protein powder.

Balanced goodness in a cup!

What protein powder should you use?

For this sweet potato protein smoothie, it calls for a vanilla protein powder. I love this particular brand of bovine protein powder because it is a complete protein with minimal ingredients.

Vanilla whey protein powder works well too!

You could use an unsweetened protein, just know it won’t have much sweetness since there is no fruit in this smoothie.

You could also use a plant-based protein powder like this brown rice protein powder.

Best way to prep mashed sweet potato

There are a few different ways to prep your sweet potato for this sweet potato smoothie. My favorite is to peel it, cube it, and then steam until fork tender. Then you can easily mash it up!

You can also roast whole sweet potatoes, then mash the flesh.

Another super simple option is to use canned mashed sweet potato.

Any option will do!

Substitutions

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this sweet potato smoothie recipe. If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Sweet potato – Mashed pumpkin and mashed butternut squash are great alternatives for a lower carb option.

Almond milk – Use your favorite non-dairy or dairy milk here. I used unsweetened plain almond milk, but vanilla milk would be lovely too!

Frozen cauliflower rice – Frozen cauliflower florets will work. If you want to not use cauliflower but would like an extra vegetable, blend in some spinach instead.

Almond butter – Use your favorite nut or seed butter as a substitute.

Chia seed – Flax seed or hemp hearts would work too!

Vanilla protein power – Read above for specific brands of substitutes. You can always omit the protein powder too, it would reduce the protein in the smoothie.

Cinnamon and ginger – Try pumpkin pie spice instead!
