One of the great summer debates… A smoothies or a slushy.  What’s the difference?

To me smoothies have some type of milk or creamy component added to them which makes them amazing.  A slushy is more fruity and watery.  Perfect for hot summer days.  What do you think?  Which do you prefer?

My orange-strawberry-banana smoothie started out as a slushy back when I was a kid, but now it’s a smoothie.  A very tasty smoothie indeed.

This blackberry oat smoothie just so happened to come together out of a love-hate relationship.  I love blackberries and the season of fresh picking is just starting.

Here’s a little ritual I’ve started these past couple weeks.

  • drive home from work
  • park
  • get out of car
  • grab stuff from car
  • close the door
  • stand right outside of car and pick blackberries
  • shove deliciously sweet blackberries in my mouth
  • wish I had a ladder out so I could pick more blackberries
  • go inside

Everyday there are more and more blackberries to eat and they are huge!

So that’s the love part… now the hate.

We just can’t seem to kill the wild blackberry vines!  It’s a constant battle of chop down, pull out and get scratched, only for them to reappear like we hung out inside twiddling our thumbs.   Right now is the only time of year that I’m okay with them though. Smile

So blackberries… and oats?  Yup, oats in a smoothie!

I wanted something that wouldn’t leave me hungry an hour later.  Oats are always filling and give this smoothie more of a hearty feeling to it.  If you’re not a fan of texture in your smoothie just make sure to cook and cool your oats before adding them in.

Blackberry Oat Smoothie
Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (used plain soymilk)
  • 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder (used brown rice protein)
  • 1/2 small frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seed
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 5-6 ice cubes

Directions

  1. Before you plan to make the smoothie add the oats + 1/3 cup water to a bowl.  Allow the oats to absorb the water and begin to soften (at least 30 minutes).  Alternately you can cook your oats and allow them to cool.
  2. Add everything to a blender and run on high for at least 1 minute until super smooth.

It’s so much more fun drinking from a glass straw, don’t ya think?

Refreshing.
