Two weeks ago I put myself on a sugar detox.

And two weeks ago I continued to eat sugar each day.

I failed in the detox part.

But really I won.

You see, I didn’t cut out all sugar.  My goal was to detox the processed sugary sweets from my diet.  As in, those cookies pictured above.

Which I did!  Instead of mindlessy munching on cookies, I thought about what I really wanted.  Was I hungry?  Okay, eat some real food – apple + peanut butter.

Was I thirsty?  A spinach, marionberry and banana will do the trick.

Did I just want something sweet?  My chobani peach yogurt can help with that.

Sometimes a handful of dark chocolate chips were I really wanted… so I had it.  Whoops!

I never truly cut out sugar during this detox.  I actually had a loaf of lemon poppyseed bread that I baked up the day before the detox.  I probably should have just put it in the freezer, but instead I munched on it a bit each day.

Even though I never cut sugar out completely, I regained the control I wanted.  I felt like I was unable to stop myself once I got started eating cookies, but now I can stop again at one.  Or even have none.  I guess it was more of a recalibration than a detox.

I found out that if I really listen to my body, it tells me what I need.  Sometimes all it takes it slowing down for a moment to hear what it’s saying.

How would you have done on this sugar detox?  Failed, but won?  How’s your week going so far?

AWESOME POST! It actually pairs well with what I posted today, about mindful eating.
So, basically you gave up processed sugar, or sugary foods that don’t come with any type of nutritional benefit. I think it’s brilliant!

    1. Fit Mama says:

Yup it sure does! And when I saw those cupcakes… I wanted one of them! 🙂

If I did a sugar detox I feel as though I would fail and LOSE. haha. Seriously though, I have tried before and couldn’t do it. Maybe I should try your tip about listening to my body and what it is actually craving when I feel like I’m weak and ready to cave. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Fit Mama says:

Haha you crack me up Ashley. Obviously I couldn’t cut it all out either, but I wasn’t looking to. Just to get a little more balance.

Whenever I’ve tried to cut out something entirely, I find myself failing at it. I think it’s more of a mind thing for me than anything! That being said, I don’t cut anything out anymore. Regaining some self control from time to time is necessary, but I don’t think I could ever cut something out entirely that I love!

    1. Fit Mama says:

Ya I don’t really see myself cutting anything completely out either. Obviously, I still like my sugar, just in my terms 🙂

I love this post! Healthy eating is not about cutting out everything you love forever, its about feeling in control so you’re not a slave to the cravings. Everything in moderation. Def counts as a win:)

    1. Fit Mama says:

Bla ya being a slave to cookies is no fun. Moderation for sure!

Good for you! I’ve done something similar and come out with the same result! Sometimes a little more control is exactly what you need!

    1. Fit Mama says:

Yup a little more control was just what I needed. And I got it!

Earlier this year, I cut out all added sugar. It was hard, but it forced me to realize how filing and satisfying whole, clean foods are. But, I have to say, I’m much happier eating sugar again : ).

    1. Fit Mama says:

I definitely like sugar too, but whole foods do make me feel the best!
