a day in the life with a 1 month old

by Heather

Yesterday Hunter turned 1 month old, so I thought it would be fun to capture what a day with the little guy is like.

6:15am wake up to Hunter whimpering. Try to get him to sleep a bit more but he resists. He’s hungry so we get up, go to the nursery to nurse + change his diaper.

I’m very sleepy from the night before since he kept me up from 1-3am.

6:45am head upstairs. Feed dog and cat.

Put Hunter in the swing and get coffee + start on breakfast which is almost always custard oats.

nectarine custard oats with almond butter and hemp seed

Move Hunter to boppy to look outside.

A few minutes of tummy time, but it doesn’t last long since he’s already pretty tired again.

7:30am swaddle + cuddle as I do my devotional.

He falls asleep, I eat, blog, pump (up to 2 ounces!), clean the little box, and clean the upstairs bathroom.

Snack on piece of left over pizza and a peanut butter coconut no bake bar.

9:30am wake him up to nurse then diaper change.

10:00am head out for a walk with Joe.

10:25am back home, swaddle and put on couch. He falls asleep right away. Get snack, do some stuff on the computer while I eat.

hummus-egg salad + cucumber slices and cherries

After 5 minutes he begins to make some noise. 5 more minutes go by and he’s about to cry. Turns out he got hiccups which woke him up. I pick him up and try to get him back to sleep with his pacifier.

11:00am he’s asleep so I put him down in the pack n play to sleep in our bedroom. Instead of the white noise I left my body pump music playing on my phone to see if that works.

I shower and get out to Hunter crying. The body pump music didn’t work!

Sooth for 10 minutes, put him down, and he begins crying again. Sooth for 10 more minutes and rest with him for 20 more minutes.

12:00pm come upstairs, Hunter goes into bouncy chair and I blow dry my hair, feed Joe and warm up left overs for lunch just in time to pick him up when he starts crying.

12:10pm while he nurses I eat lunch.

left over egg fried rice with cabbage and tofu

I changed his diaper and get him ready to leave.

12:45pm we head out the door to the YMCA for a goodbye party.

2:30pm back home, he wakes up and is cranky/hungry.

Banana for me, boob for him + TV watching.

Now he’s happy again!

Hunter goes in the bouncy chair while I prep for his bath.

3:15pm bath time!

Jacob gets home during his bath and snaps some photos.

3:30pm I tried to get some book reading in with him.

We only made it to K before he started crying so I swaddled him up, turned on a how I met your mother, rocked him to sleep and munch on hummus + pita chips.

4:00pm we head down to the bedroom, he goes in the pack n play, me in bed for a nap.

4:30pm he wakes up, cries, I console him and he’s back to sleep 15 minutes later, but I wait 10 more minutes before putting him back down to make sure he’s really asleep. I go back to napping too.

5:45pm Hunter wakes ready to eat. Jacob was napping upstairs so I feed him in the nursery.

When we’re done Jacob’s awake so he spends some time with Hunter while I make dinner.

I wanted something easy so breakfast for dinner it was.

omelets with apple chicken sausage, mushroom, onion and sharp cheddar + salad

We eat on the couch, relax and watch some TV.  Hunter hangs out in between us and eventually drifts off into sleep.

8:00pm we head downstairs to get ready for bed.  Yes 8 o’clock!  Jacob gets up really early for work and we’re both really tired by then.

Hunter into the pack n play for the night. I refill my waters (bedroom and nursery), brush my teeth, change and hop in bed for the little bit before he wakes up to eat again.

I’ve found that if I wake him early for the next feeding, he has a heck of a time getting back to sleep. He’ll cry and not settle down for a loooong time, so I just wait until he’s ready.

8:25pm Hunter wakes up and we head off to the nursery to eat. After a quick diaper change and re-swaddle we’re back in the glider. He liked his back to be patted (just like being burped), so I start with that to calm him down. A few seconds later I’ve got spit all over my shoulder and chest! He rarely spits up so that was a shocker. It probably happened because he ate on both sides, then back on another which isn’t normal.

After 2 or 3 minutes he’s asleep — surprisingly speedy. I wait at least 15 minutes after he falls asleep to put him back into bed to make sure he’s asleep and now we’re both back to sleep before 9:30pm.

10:55pm he wakes up — nurse, diaper change and he falls back to sleep again quickly.

11:35pm back to bed.

1:00am he starts to stir again like he’s going to wake up so I give him my pinkie to suck on for a second and turn the white noise up a notch to hopefully get him to sleep a bit longer…. mama was sleepy!

1:25am the whimpering picks up so we head back to the nursery to eat.
I change his diaper, re-swaddle and begin to try to get him back to sleep, but this time it isn’t going to be so easy. He’s awake, crying and squirming around resisting going back to sleep even though I can tell he’s tired. He then takes a poop in his (freshly changed) diaper, so I decide to change it again since he’s already having trouble falling back to sleep. I go from sitting to standing to walking and finally get him to fall alseep.

We’re back in bed at 2:45pm.

4:00am he wakes up — nurse, diaper change and he falls back to sleep again quickly (thankfully).

4:40am back to bed.

5:15am he wakes up out of habit this time (normally we get up between 5:30-6:00am), but since it had only been 1 hour since he last ate, I try to get him back to sleep with a pacifier.  He falls asleep on top of the covers on the bed, so I just scoot over since Jacob’s already up and getting ready for work and I fall asleep.

7:15am much later than our normal morning time we wake up and start the day all over again.

Hi Heather! This post was great. Gives me an idea of what I’ll soon be in for :). Our little girl is due to arrive 9/2/12 and we can’t wait!!! Hunter is adorable by the way! Glad you are enjoying your time with him. I also plan to cloth diaper and have picked out a few types to try in the beginning. Once I decide on my favorite I will order a larger supply. I would also like to use cloth wipes and am currently trying to decide the best type of solution to use on them. I’ve been looking into making my own vs purchasing a concentrate and diluting it in a spray bottle. Just wondering how the cloth diapering is working out so far and what you ended up using for your cloth wipes? Thanks!! Leslie

Hey Leslie! September will be here in no time, so so exciting for you! My friend made me a stack of cloth wipes, just out of flannel cloth. Nothin fancy and I make my own solution for them with water, baby shampoo and oil. I’ll share more in my cloth diaper post I hope to get up this upcoming week.
