between interruptions {book review and giveaway}

by Heather

A year ago I might not have been interested in reading Between Interruptions, but now with our Hunter on the way and the anticipation of becoming parents in May, I’ve turned into this crazed reading lady. I am loving reading anything baby or parenting related. I don’t think I’ve ever read as much as I have these past 5 months, and that even includes my 4 years of college.

About Between Interruptions, from the publisher

Between Interruptions is a remarkable collection of original and heartfelt essays about the process of becoming a mother. Written by a wide range of mothers – from a Hollywood celebrity to an immigrant domestic worker, the book explores the transformative experiences in our journey as mothers. Provocative, honest and emotional, the stories focus on the impact motherhood has on our identity, sexuality, ambition and relationships. Laid bare in this collection are the vivd, gut-wrenching and exhilarating true confessions and secret longings of mothers across all ages, cultures and classes. Whether it’s a story about a journalist going to war and missing her baby, or a mother finding perfection in autism, or a mother struggling to breastfeed through post-partum depression, or a mother learning to let go of her dream to stay home with her children because she has to work, there’s a story in this collection for every mother.

About the author Cori Howard

Cori Howard is the founder of The Momoir Project, an online writing centre that offers memoir writing classes, workshops and workbooks. She’s also an award-winning journalist whose work in newspapers, magazines, TV and radio has taken her around the world. Her stories – many about motherhood – have appeared in publications including Reader’s Digest, Elle, The Independent, among many others. She lives in Vancouver, B.C. with her family.

My thoughts on the book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. While there wasn’t a long story to follow along with anticipation, you got to read 30 mini stories. It reminded me a bit of blog reading. With reading blogs, a lot of the time you get a story, or a little glimpse into someone else’s life which I love. In Between Interruptions, you most definitely got a glimpse into these ladies lives. Most shared the struggles they had to deal with or overcome when entering into motherhood. Choosing a career over being a stay at home mom was a big struggle for many, which I know is a tough decision a lot of moms have to make.

There were only a handful of stories I didn’t care for, but out of 30 that’s pretty dang good! The writing was excellent as well.

A couple of my favorite stories were titled Searching for Friends in Mommyland, which basically told how these mothers found friends with other mothers. I think I enjoyed them because of the awkward situations they went through which ended with funny stories.

Another thing I loved about this book was the title. Over the new year’s weekend I was relaxing and reading when my dad asked me what I was reading. I told him ‘between interruptions’. His response, ‘okay fine’, and walked away. My mom and I got a giggle out of it as I was telling him that is the actual title of the book. It was kind of fitting though because I did get a little reading in that week, in between interruptions.

The giveaway

I was lucky enough to be selected to host a giveaway for Between Interruptions. I’d definitely recommend it to a friend, and in fact I already told my sister-in-law that she should borrow it now that I’m finished with it. And now that I’ve read it, I’d even recommend it to non-mothers/expecting mothers too.

many of my friends have been having babies and that has got me thinking every so slightly about motherhood in the next few years and then kind of freaking out 😉 It would be very interesting to look into other mothers’ lives and how they make it through and enjoy the blessing. I to like getting a glimpse into others lives like in blogs.

I am TTC and I have been reading books and blogs about mothers, so this would be a good read. As for favorite book read lately, that would be the Hunger Games books.
