I’ve kinda had a thing for cereal lately. Not really for breakfast much, but for snacks and evening munching. It’s so easy to mindlessly munch on cereal, so I try to have healthier cereals on hand.

Cereals that don’t come with crazy long ingredient lists, and ingredients I can recognize. But these cereals come with a pretty penny around $2.50/box.

I like to jazz it up with some raisins or dried cranberrries, sunflower seeds and cinnamon. Quite tasty, but doesn’t keep me full for very long.

Then there’s always my standby puffed amaranth cereal, which I do love. It comes with more protein (and a great amount of iron too!), but I’m looking for something new. Something with more of a cereal crunch, and hopefully a bit of protein in there too to help with fullness.

So I scoured around the internet and found some options.

Option 1: Homemade breakfast cereal features bran, whole wheat flour and cornmeal with a hint of cocoa powder.

Option 2: Cinnamon sugar socca crackers features chickpea flour (which I have on hand) and buckwheat flour

Option 3: Healthy charms cereal features raisins as one of the sweeteners (and I love raisins), sorghum flour (never used before) and flax seed

Option 4: Crunch maple quinoa cereal features quinoa!

Option 5: Cinnamon toast crunch features chickpea flour and millet flour

Now tell me, which one would you pick to make? I have 2 options that I’m leaning towards, but I want to hear what you think first.

Also, if you know of a great homemade cereal (not so much granola) recipe, please share!

I plan to make some cereal over the weekend when I have more kitchen time. Now I only wish it was Friday so my cereal making adventures could begin!

Have a great one. 🙂

This is great. I never thought about making cereal. I recently found out I’m allergic to oats which practically eliminates all cereals, or at least the ones I want to eat and even my favorite Puffins! I will totally try some of these recipes!

Oh no! Yeah, check out the recipes, some are gluten free and don’t include oats.

ive been DYING to make the cinnamon sugar socca crackers! can they please just make themselves and get in my stove already! when i was in college my fav cereal mix was 3 types of frosted mini wheats (choco, strawberry & blueberry) then the milk was the best part 🙂

“If I also learn how to make cereal from scratch, I’ll be in serious trouble” says the girl who currently has 10 boxes of cereal in her pantry…

Haha, I’m sure it’s much easier just opening a box! 10?!?

Cereal is one of my go-to meals. The Kellogg’s FiberPlus(R) cereals are my favorite and I too love jazzing them up with a few banana slices, peanut butter, extra cinnamon – I could go on and on! Enjoy your cereal experiments. 🙂

i LOVE cereal too but i rarely buy it because of the cost and how little self control i have with it! i’d love to see some of your homemade cereal creations!

    1. Get Healthy with Heather says:

It’s tough to have self control with cereal!

I need to check these out! I have been looking for other great options. Sometimes you have to mix up the daily bowl of oatmeal!

All of those sound great but I would probably lean toward #2 and #4. I’m interested to see which ones you choose and how they turn out 🙂
