What a weekend!  We (okay, Jacob) made tons of progress on our front yard.  Do you remember what it looked like when I was first began getting started with lawn care – the ripping out weeds stage?  That was back in the end of April.

Yeah… not the best looking.  But now.  Ooohhh now it is much better.  Let me show you the progress pictures and finished look.

For mother’s day had Jacob built me 3 raised garden boxes.  The plan was to rip out half of the grass and place them in the front where the sun hits them all day long.

Step one: rip out all the grass with a shovel

Step two: lay landscaping fabric down to keep weeds out, then place the garden boxes in their spots

Step three: dirt and gravel arrive

Step four: shovel wheel barrel after wheel barrel full of gravel and lay it around the garden boxes – then do the same with the dirt, but into the garden boxes

Step five: marvel at the finished project!

Doesn’t it look a ton better than the first photo?

So far I have just planted spinach in one box.  Since it’s late in the season I’m going to miss out on a lot of the warmer weather plants, but I think that will be a-okay.  I’ll start small and get used to gardening.  I’m thinking about planting kale, lettuce, peas, broccoli and green onion this week.

I really didn’t help Jacob much with the project.  I was on Hunter hang out until he went down for a nap, then I did a little project and worked on weeding in the front and back yard a bit.

I found these 3 pictures at goodwill ($2 each) and thought they would be perfect on our front porch, near the garden.

I painted the frames white.  I love how they look like old style seed packets.

All hung up between the front door and window.  There’s a bit of a glare in this picture, but you can see the actual carrots, peas and tomato pictures better above.

We had fun doing all this stuff around the yard over the weekend.  It felt so good to get things accomplished, and then enjoy being out there afterwards.  Here’s to hoping we continue with it!

What did you do over the weekend?  Do you have any favorite fall vegetables you like to grow?
