2nd pregnancy: weeks 14-18

by Heather

More than a month has flown by since I last updated on my first trimester.  Now I’m well on my way through my second and feel it’s time to share what’s new with this pregnancy.  First, some comparison pictures.

Um, crazy difference in my belly growth this second time around.

I’ve been much less mindful about tracking this pregnancy – picture wise and even with information.  I always knew what size of fruit/veggie our little Hunter was each week.  This one… sometimes Jacob will tell me, but I rarely go into my pregnancy apps anymore.

Before I share the good, let me share the less good.

Back pain.  Ooooooh it’s the worst.  I remember having back pain towards the end of my first pregnancy, but this is so much worse.  Debilitating at times – like I’m stuck on the floor and really can’t get up because my back hurts to bad and feels stuck.  I went to the chiropractor and got a massage last week, which I think helped, but the pain is still here about 75% of the time.  Sadly the thing that makes it much worst is carrying Hunter.  Normally I carry him on my left side, which is the bad side, so I’m really trying my best to carry him on my right hip.  It’s awkward, but I can tell a difference when I do it.  I ice every day and try to foam roll too, which helps, but it just hasn’t gone away yet.  I’m hoping this weeks massage and chiropractor appointment lessens the pain some more, because it’s definitely no fun!

That’s pretty much all the not-so-good.  Headaches and nausea are better.  Honestly, any other discomfort I might be feeling takes a backseat to this back pain.

Now onto all the good!  Pregnancy is seriously flying by and I’m loving that my belly is beginning to grow.  I can tell our baby is growing too because I’m starting to feel kicks.  Just a couple random ones that were almost unnoticeable last week, but then last night once I got into bed I felt so many more.  This little kid likes when I slow down I guess.  They came at the perfect time too.  I was reading a blog post on a little boy’s monthly update (he’s a few months older than Hunter), holding back my tears (of happiness) and the little kicks came.  A few right all at once then a couple more after a little bit.  I was this close to waking Jacob up since just before he fell asleep he was asking if I’d felt anything lately.  I’m sure he’s glad I let him sleep.

Reading the post and feeling the kicks made me realize soon I won’t have my special Hunter and I time anymore.  I am so very excited about our new addition, but at the same time it makes me sappy to think about Hunter growing up and being a big brother.  I think I’m getting to that ‘cry over anything pregnancy stage’… and it’s coming on fast.  Watch out Jacob!

On a lighter note, I love teaching my classes while pregnant.  I’ve already had a few people tell me that if I can do ‘____’ (insert class) workout while pregnant, they should be able to too.  Love how pregnancy is a motivator!  I hope I can continue to motivate and challenge my classes all the way trough my entire pregnancy again.  We shall see though!  Working out feel good except for when I’m dealing with back pain, which has only happened a couple times while teaching.   Since I teach a weekly fitness yoga class now (think power yoga), I’m excited to see how that helps me through this pregnancy. I’m never very good about doing yoga on my own, but the great thing about teaching a class is that it forces me to do it.

I picked up a second for two fitness top when I saw it on sale on zulily.  Yoga for two all the way. 🙂

Speaking of maternity clothes, I feel like I’m in between my normal clothes and maternity clothes.  Since I wore most of my current maternity clothes through to the end, they’re pretty stretched out – especially the pants.  My belly and waist are too small for them, but it’s definitely starting to get much more uncomfortable in my regular size bottoms.  Jeans are pretty much out because I rarely wear them – I live in workout clothes almost all of the time.  Tops still fit, as long as they’re on the longer length.  I hate feeling like I have to continuously pull my shirt down.  I may try to find a pair of leggings to tide me over until I can fit in more of my maternity pants.  Leggings are the perfect bottoms for me – comfy like workout pants, but it looks like I made more of an effort. 🙂

So far 18 weeks in I’ve gained about 8 pounds – slow and steady.  One week from today we find out if we’re having a boy or girl!

What’s your guess, another boy or switching it up with a girl?  Have any of you mamas had to deal with early pregnancy back pain?  Tips would be greatly appreciated!

On the agenda for today: lots of kid playing and bib making.  I had some fun at the fabric store yesterday. 🙂

You look so cute! I think almost every mom I know that has had two or more kids has said their second time around they were showing way earlier and were measuring bigger than the first. Must have to do with the fact that our bellies have already stretched and loosened up the muscles 🙂 You look great though and I think it’s a girl 🙂

Aww, you’re such a cutie mama! Sorry about the back pain, back pain is the PITS!!! For me, I find that heat wraps and Ben-Gay can be helpful, but I don’t have kids so I don’t know if those are OK to use if you’re pregnant? Would you be able to get a back massager to use at home? I’ve also done some stretches that can help a little, but since you’re seeing a pro and also do yoga I’m sure you’ve got that part covered. Feel better!
