Today I bid adieu to my second trimester. It’s just crazy to think that I’m already in the final few months. It’s gone by too fast!
Some great things I’m going to miss from the second trimester:
- Energy, I’m already much more tired
- Fitting in workout shirts – need to invest in more that don’t show the belly! Some how the dryer keeps shrinking term, 😉
Some even greater things to look forward to this trimester:
- More frequent mid-wife appointments, which means more hearing how our little guy is doing
- Baby showers! I’m not gunna lie, it’s going to be so much fun filling Hunter’s room
- Our Bradley method birth classes
- Free maternity photo shoot! – I’ll be the model for a training
- Hunter arriving!!!!!
How’s Hunter growing?
This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended. She’s sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby’s brain is very active now.
While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don’t bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle. — from babycenter
How am I feeling?
Tired. Sleepy. Exhausted. Hungry.
I can definitely tell I’ve moved into a new stage of my pregnancy. I’m just fine every day until about 1pm, then I’m a zombie. 8 hour days at work are really tough to get through and all I do is sit all day.
Later this afternoon I go in for a mid-wife appointment and where I’ll have some routine blood work done, along with my gestational diabetes test. I know low iron levels can make you feel tired and lethargic, but I’m hoping since my stores of iron were really high when I was tested 6 months ago that they’re still up there. It’s a hope! Oh and the diabetes test… I’m not too worried about it, but I could always be surprised. Pregnancy is full of surprises 🙂
My food
I have felt like such a hungry beast lately! Maybe Hunter’s beginning to grow a lot, or maybe it’s just my way of trying to give my body more energy when I’m tired, but either way the hunger just doesn’t quit!
My days have turned into this:
Small coffee + breakfast around 6:30am
First morning snack around 8:30-9am
Second morning snack around 10-10:30am
Lunch around 12-12:30pm
First afternoon snack around 2:30-3pm
Second afternoon snack around 4:30-5pm (depends if I’m teaching that night or snacking while I make dinner)
Dinner around 6:30pm (or 8 if I teach)
Evening snack around 8-8:30pm
Clearly I am eating all day! It’s odd because I don’t skimp at my meals and eat until I’m full, but then miraculously I’m super hungry again less than 2 hours later. I’m getting lots of protein, fats, whole grains and fruits + veggies throughout the day, so not really sure what it is.
Maybe it’s a normal third trimester thing? Has that happened to you?
Fitness
I’ve added something new this week… more walking! I started feeling bad that Joe (our dog) wasn’t getting very many walks. It was down to about 1 a week, and really running cause I’d take him along with me. So I decided it was time to commit to walking him.
Three mornings a week I’m free so I decided at 6:15am we’re headed out the door. Whatever I’m doing waits for those 20 brisk minutes. So far it’s working out really well! I never knew just making a commitment to a time would keep me on track.
Great motivation tip there, commit!!
Here’s how the week went:
Saturday: rest
Sunday: 2.3 mile run
Monday: 20 minute brisk walk
Tuesday: 20 minute brisk walk
Wednesday: taught body pump
Thursday: 20 minute brisk walk + taught 60 minute cycle
Friday: body pump in the AM + taught a 45 minute cycle class
Now adding in a short strength workout on Mondays is my next goal. Just need to find a time + commit to it and it should work… right?
Massage
I mentioned last week that I was looking forward to my massage on Saturday. It was good, but definitely not great. Nothing compared to my pre-pregnancy massages I’ve got. I really didn’t like laying on my side to get massaged. I never got totally relaxed and comfortable and felt like I had to resist the push forward, which meant my muscles weren’t totally at ease.
I wonder if an actual pre-natal massage with the special table where you can lay on your stomach would be different? Anyone tried those?
Breast feeding class
Tuesday night Jacob and I went to a 4 hour breastfeeding class. Time actually flew by and we learned a lot! I plan to share more about what we learned in a separate post this weekend, so be on the look out for that.
We were the furthest couple away from our due date, so it was really cool getting to see how much bigger my belly will get. One lady was a week or 2 from her due date too!
Random bits
- How far along: 28 weeks, 2 days
- Total weight gained: 25 pounds
- Next mid-wife appointment: this afternoon! I just chugged my diabetes testing juice. Surprisingly it wasn’t too bad, just tasted like very sweet orange soda. Jealous? 😉
- Current craving: salty chips and crackers
- Plans for this weekend: NONE and I couldn’t be more excited for it.
Tell me something great about your Friday…. other than it’s Friday!
Have a great one!
Heather

You are looking fantastic! Love the progress pictures. I’ll be interested to hear more about your Bradely classes. I read a book, but wish I would have taken a class. I did NOT get the relaxing part down at all! 😉
I will definitely share what we learn!
Yes… try a massage with the special table! I had one and it was awesome and so comfortable. I was going to get another one but ended up going into labor the day of my appointment 🙂
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I definitely want one sometime 🙂
Hi! My husband found your blog because he also brews beer and we end up with lots of spent grains, so now I know how to use it in my granola making efforts! I started sneaking around and found your pregnancy post and loved it. We live overseas so weren’t able to take Bradley classes, but had the book and both read and worked through it when our son was born – it was amazingly helpful. I had him in a hospital in Canada with a birth team that was totally on board with a natural delivery. They were so excited about how my husband and I worked together and how I labored. It was because of the Bradley stuff! And yes – totally exhausted the third trimester. My son ended up being huge (9lbs, 13 oz & 23.5″ long!) so I’m thinking my body had to work really hard 🙂 I read up about pregnancy massage and everything I read didn’t recommend the bed where you can lay stomach down because it strained your back with pulling all the weight from the baby forward.
Wow big boy!! So glad up hear Bradley worked well for you and your hubby. And I’m so excited to brew again this summer… and sample after our lil guy gets here :). Do you have any spent grain recipes?
So glad you are doing so well, I’ve really enjoyed following your journey 🙂
oh Heather you are looking amazing as always!! crazy how fast time has gone. I know Lori is just around the corner crazy

Yeah her big day is coming up so quickly, time is crazy!
Cute baby bump! You are right on about iron. Your midwife will tell you this, but your blood volume is really expanding right now which is the usual reason for fatigue. Here’s the smoothie that saved me at the start of the 3rd tri: 2/3 blender full of kale/spinach, few ice cubes, 1 glass apple juice, 1-2 bananas.
Ellen, that’s exactly what we were told yesterday! Thanks for the smoothie recipe, I’m all about greens in my smoothies!
I love watching the progress on how you have grown. Your just so adorable! I wanted to tell you I loved your German Brownie Bars, I ate all 3 of them when I came home from work today!!! I’m going to see if you have the recipe on your blog, I just loved them!!!
They’re sooo good huh?! It’s Katie’s recipe. Here’s the link: http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/02/08/german-chocolate-fudge-bites/
Yum, thank you!! I love Katie’s site, she has some great recipes! I love her peanut butter and raisins. I made 4 batches of it in the past 2 weeks and I finished them off today too!!
Mmmmm PB and raisins is sure a good combo!
You are just glowing! I think I say that every time you post a pregnancy update.
I loved the progess photos! Your belly is just adorable! 🙂
Awww thanks Kristen 🙂
I was madddddd hungry with kay at 5 months, then it seemed to even out! The gd test wasnt nearly as bad as i thought it was going to be either! You still look freaking adorable
I hope it evens out… it’s crazy to be eating non-stop!
