sewing lately: 11.8.13

Happy Friday!  I’m quite excited for the weekend.  Not really for anything in particular, just more time with the hubs who’s been working a lot more this week and maybe some sleeping in (Hunter’s finally back to a normal wake up time after the time change).

Remember my post on what I planned to sew for kids clothes week?  Well, that week has come and gone.  It was such a great kick-in-the-butt to get me sewing a lot more!  I definitely consider myself a novice sewer.  I learned some basics from my mom growing up, and heavily rely on picture tutorials and videos to learn how to do different techniques.  The internet is so amazing for that.

I still haven’t made it through everything I planned to sew for KCW, but I’m close to finishing them!  Here’s what is done so far.

Hunter’s lumber jack hat

If you saw our pumpkin patch adventures, then you’ve already had a glimpse into a couple things I made.   I made Hunter a lumber jack hat using this great tutorial from Delia Creates.

It was definitely a challenge sewing with the thin slate grey corduroy and fluffy faux sherpa.  But, I persisted and am pretty happy with it.  Of course I can see the mistakes, I’m just hoping no one else can. 🙂

There’s a bit more room for him to grow into it, so he’ll be getting lots of use out of it this fall/winter/spring.

Hunter’s mushroom suspenders

I am in love with these suspenders.  My original tutorial I was going to use was no longer available online, and I couldn’t find one I was super thrilled about, so I actually ended up drafting my own pattern for these.  A first for me!  Suspenders are super easy and turn out pretty cute in my opinion.

I used cotton mushroom fabric for the front, and green elastic for the back.  I probably could have made them about 1 inch shorter, but since he’s constantly growing, they’ll fit perfectly soon.

Hunter’s skinny corduroy pants

These pants are definitely skinny!  The free pattern and tutorial says they are 18 months in size, and I’d say it’s pretty close.  Not a big 18 months, but a small one.  I think now that Hunter’s not wearing diapers as often, they’ll fit a little bit better.  It was a squeeze to get him into them so they really won’t last long.  But, baby girl will get to wear them too, so they’re ready for her!

The instructions for the waist band are not really clear, so that was a bummer.  But, for my first pair of pants (although I’ve made shorts), they’re pretty cute on him!

That’s everything I made for Hunter.  Now onto baby girl clothes.

Baby girl’s geranium dress

I am in love with this dress.  The black birds on white cotton + mustard linen fabric.  Pinks and purples are so not my thing, I love more neutral colors for our girl and this is perfect.  It’s 0-3 months in size so I’ll pair leggings and a cardigan with it to keep her warm in the cold months when she arrives.

The pattern was free for this size, but I’ll definitely be investing in the full pattern with more sizes + options.

Baby girl’s hoodie

When I finally got around to making this lapped front hoodie, it turned out to be super simple!  I love the mushroom fabric for the hood lining.  The button on the front?  My addition to cover up a spot I didn’t think turned out so well.  But it fits!  Another 0-3 month size.

Flannel PJ pants

Notice no name by these?  Originally made for Hunter, but waaaaaayyy too small, I’m hoping baby girl will fit into these at some point (maybe 9-12 months?).  I need to take the elastic waist band in (since it was measured for Hunter’s waist) and will also probably hem them to be a bit shorter, but I’ll wait until the time comes for that.  The free pattern was supposed to be 2-3T, but it obviously wasn’t.  The rise is too low, especially for cloth diapering.  I even tried them on Hunter without a diaper and they barely fit over his tush.  And his tush isn’t that big.

You live and you learn.

So, the two items I haven’t finished from KCW are Hunter’s flannel PJ bottoms and top.  The tops is sooooo close to being done.  My mom is going to put buttons on it with her super sweet sewing machine (hopefully today!), then I just have to hem the sleeves.  This weekend I hope to cut out a new pattern for PJ bottoms and get them finished soon.  The ones I made above were a really quick sew, so I don’t think the next ones will take all too long to make.
