Crispy Roasted Black Beans (Easy 3-Ingredient Snack)

A can of black beans, a little oil, a shake of seasoning, and 20 minutes in the oven – that’s it!

If you’ve never tried roasted black beans before, get ready. They’re crunchy, salty, a little addicting, and way healthier than reaching for another bag of chips!

Simple ingredients you’ll need

Scroll down to view the recipe card below for the full ingredients list, nutrition facts, and step-by-step instructions

  • Black beans – One can, drained and rinsed well. This same method works with garbanzo beans (chickpeas), kidney beans, or pinto beans too.
  • Avocado oil – Helps the beans crisp up in the oven and gives them that gorgeous golden color.
  • Seasoning of choice – Chili powder, taco seasoning, smoked paprika, or a simple garlic powder and sea salt blend all work great here.

How to make crispy roasted black beans

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Drain and rinse the black beans, then spread them on a paper towel or clean kitchen towel and pat them completely dry. This is the real secret to that crispy texture, so don’t rush it!
  3. In a medium bowl, toss the dried beans with the avocado oil and your seasoning of choice until every bean is coated.
  4. Spread the beans out in a single, even layer on the prepared baking sheet – give them some space so they roast instead of steam.
  5. Roast for 18-22 minutes, shaking the pan around the halfway mark, until the beans are deeply golden and crispy.

  1. Let the beans cool on the pan for a few minutes before digging in. They’ll crisp up even more as they cool, so be patient!

Recipe tip

  • Dry your beans well – Pat them completely dry with a paper towel before roasting. Extra moisture is the number one enemy of crispy beans.
  • Give them room – Spread the beans in a single layer on your sheet pan so hot air can get all the way around them.
  • Keep a close eye near the end – Ovens vary, so start checking around the 18-minute mark to avoid burning.
  • Let them rest – Beans keep crisping up as they cool, so don’t judge them straight out of the oven.

Serving suggestions

  • Sprinkle over a bowl of roasted vegetables, roasted sweet potato, or salads for extra crunch and protein.
  • Use in place of tortilla chips as a crunchy topping for soups, salads, or grain bowls.
  • Toss into a bean salad with bell pepper, corn, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
  • Pack into small containers for an easy, satisfying snack the whole family can grab on the go.
  • Serve alongside hummus or guacamole for extra dipping fun.

Meal prep & storage

Once completely cooled, store your roasted black beans in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the fridge for up to a week if you’d like them to last a little longer.

Keep in mind that canned beans hold natural moisture, so they’re crispiest the day you make them – by the next day they’ll soften slightly (still delicious, just more “roasted bean” than “crunchy chip”).

To bring back some crunch, pop them back in a 400-degree F oven for 5-7 minutes before serving or toast in the air fryer.

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this easy black bean recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Black beans – Swap for garbanzo beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, or butter beans for a different texture and flavor.

Avocado oil – Olive oil works beautifully too, and you probably already have it in your pantry.

Seasoning – Go taco-style with taco seasoning, add smoky depth with chili powder and cumin, keep it simple with garlic powder and salt, or brighten things up with fresh lime juice and a splash of apple cider vinegar.

Sweet variation – Toss the roasted beans with a little maple syrup and a pinch of cinnamon right after they come out of the oven for a sweet-and-salty treat. The kids go crazy for this one!

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my roasted black beans really crispy?

The key is drying the beans thoroughly before roasting and spreading them in a single, even layer so they roast instead of steam. Letting them cool for a few minutes after baking also helps them crisp up even more.

Can I make this recipe in the air fryer?

Yes! Air fry at 380 degrees F for about 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until crispy.

How long do roasted black beans stay crispy?

They’re at their crunchiest the day they’re made. Stored in an airtight container, they’ll keep for several days, though they’ll soften slightly over time. A quick reheat in the oven brings the crunch right back.

Can I use dried beans instead of canned?

Absolutely – just cook and drain them first. Using a can of black beans is what makes this recipe so quick, though, so I usually save dried beans for other recipes.
