Baked apple french toast is made with cinnamon raisin sprouted grain bread and saucy caramelized apples. Each slice of bread is dipped in the French toast batter, arranged in a baking dish, and then topped with warm cinnamon apples. It’s the perfect breakfast or brunch for friends and family during apple season!

If you love french toast but want a breakfast that you can pop in the oven and forget about while you go about your morning, this French toast casserole is for you!

You’ll start with a typical French toast batter of eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and honey. Once that is ready to go, the slices of bread get a quick dip and then they’re added to the baking dish.

As you’re preparing the bread slices, feel free to get your apple slices cooking on the stovetop with butter, maple syrup, and cinnamon.

You’ll layer the soft and cinnamony apples over the bread slices, cover it, and bake until puffy and cooked through!

I love the look of individual slices of bread, but you could also use bread cubes like I do with my dairy-free egg nog french toast!

Make ahead meal – The beauty of this french toast bake is that you can prep it in advance! You can fully cook the casserole, let it cool, then store it in the fridge to reheat pieces as needed. Another option is to prep the bake until the point that you cover it in foil. Instead of putting it in the oven to cook, keep it in the fridge overnight for up to 2 days and then bake it fresh in the morning!

All the fall flavors – The saucy cinnamon apples are the star of this french toast, but don’t skip the cinnamon raisin bread either! The combination of the two work really well together.

Step 1: In a large bowl add the eggs, milk, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1/2 tbsp cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Whisk well until combined.

Step 2: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Oil a 9″ x 13″ baking dish lightly with oil or butter. Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture, then place them in the prepared baking dish, layering as you go. Pour the remaining custard over the French toast pieces.

Step 3: In a large skillet over medium heat add the sliced apples, remaining 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1/2 tbsp cinnamon, and the butter. Stir and cook for 5-10 minutes, until the apples are saucy and slightly cooked.

Step 4: Pour the apple topping over the French toast pieces and cover the entire pan with aluminum foil.

Step 5: Bake for 40 minutes, then remove the foil and allow the French toast to cook for 5-10 minutes, or until puffy.

French toast keeps well for up to 1 week in the fridge. You’ll want to allow the baked french toast to cool to room temperature before adding to an airtight container, or wrapping in plastic wrap to store.
