Garden Update

by Heather

Over the weekend I didn’t workout, but I sure am sore!  Between Friday, Saturday and a little bit on Sunday Jacob and I spent 6+ hours out in the yard.

Friday I finally got my garden going.  I’d been neglecting it for long enough now.  About half of my starters I planted died.  I think they were in their little pots for too long.

My asparagus crowns got moved.  Turns out I planted them wrong and upside down.  I’m hoping that’s why nothing was showing up.

The kale got transplanted from the ground into a huge pot.  Going left from the kale will be lettuce, cantaloupe (random seeds I took from the fruit I cut up, anyone have luck with that before?), basil, parsley and oregano.

My sage was inside and now outside.  It’s lasted a whole year but now it’s looking pretty dead and dried up.

The only surviving cucumber starter got it’s own pot.  Supposedly these do when in pots.  At least that’s what the package said.

Incase they don’t do well in pots I planted some in the ground.  Lettuce, leek and arugula starters went in.  Cucumber + eggplant seeds into the ground.  My peas were planted a couple months ago and recently I had to spray with soapy water to get bugs off.  It worked like a charm!  Mint I just can’t keep away. Winking smile

Lastly my broccoli and brussel sprout starters went in.  They were by far my strongest looking starters so I’m hopeful they grow well.  Tomato + arugula seeds are in the ground now too.  The strawberry plant from 2-3 years ago is still kicking.  It’s even got 5-6 flowers on it.

After my garden prep I headed to the backyard to help Jacob.  We have a serious pile of yard debris growing back there.  It’ll definitely be 2-3 trailer loads.  We’ve decided we actually want a nice looking backyard, or at least well maintained with grass growing.  After 3 years of neglect it’s a lot of work!

We stopped at home depot to price out grass seed and moss killer and got a bunch of info on what to do to get our yard looking nice.  It turns out our area needs lime added to the soil and the guy explained the sequence of what steps to take.  Moss killing + grass seed planting should happen in 1-2 weeks.  Lets hope this weather cooperates nicely like it did on Friday and Saturday!

It seemed like a lot of work but it’s worth it. I like how you plant your own veggies. It’s really smart.

It was our wedding anniversary last Sunday and we celebrated it at home since the weather was off but it was a lot of fun.

The garden looks great so far! I can’t wait to have a yard to do that.

Yesterday I saw a great show in the city and just relaxed at night with pizza and a movie. Tonight I’m going to a running clinic for those running the BAA 10k this summer. I hope I pick up some good tips! 🙂

This will be such a nice garden. I am jealous! I want to grow some stuff.
I have the worst green thumb. I managed to kill my basil last year. I want to try it again this year since nothing tastes as delicious!
