Iced Blue Matcha with Protein – Butterfly Pea Latte

My love for actual matcha runs strong. Since switching away from coffee, it’s become my favorite thing.

I love making iced matcha lattes at home because of their delicious flavor, and you know exactly what’s in them, making them just to your liking every single time.

But for a caffeine-free alternative, we make blue matchas! The blue part comes from the butterfly pea powder, which is made from an Asian blue flower called Clitoria Ternatea.

It’s a natural colorant and also has antioxidants like flavonoids, tannins, and polyphenols, which help the body fight free radicals. I love a drink with benefits, and this one sure has it!

The taste is more floral as opposed to earthy, like you’d get with traditional matcha powder.

Why you’ll love this healthy drink recipe

Beautiful blue color – Ground up 🦋 blue butterfly pea flowers is what makes these beautiful blue drinks! Originally, we had butterfly pea flower tea on hand that my husband would steep for fancy cocktails, and now I’m hooked on making blue matchas with it using the fine powder!

Protein boost – Just like my ice protein matcha latte, this blue tea drink gives you 10 grams of protein!

Caffeine free – While regular matchas are lower in caffeine than coffee, they still contain caffeine, just like caffeinated tea. Blue matcha tea is a great caffeine-free alternative that you can give to kids! My oldest daughter is actually the one the most obsessed with this drink, and she’ll make it all the time for herself when she gets back from school.

How to make a hot blue matcha

Whenever I make a hot matcha, whether it’s a regular green matcha or a blue matcha, I adjust the ingredient amounts slightly.

I begin with the milk and will mix 2 ounces of cold milk with the protein powder and blue powder. When my water is hot, I pour about 6 ounces of hot water over the milk mixture while frothing until mixed well.

Personally, I like less milk in my hot drinks and more milk in my iced drinks, but you can adjust and play with the measurements to find what you enjoy!

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this blue tea iced matcha recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Butterfly pea powder – An alternative is to make this with matcha green tea leaves that are ground into a powder.

Unsweetened almond milk – Use your favorite type of milk, whether it’s cashew milk, oat milk, soy milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, plant-based milk or dairy milk.

Vanilla protein powder – The protein powder sweetened the drink while also giving it a protein boost. You can skip the protein powder or use an unsweetened version. For a little sweetness, add maple syrup or simple syrup to what your taste buds like. I also like to use whey protein powder because it blends, but to make a vegan blue matcha latte, choose a plant-based protein powder that you like the flavor of!
