Good morning! Or afternoon 🙂

First off, I want to start out my giving a big thanks for all the congrats on our baby boy news. It’s such an exciting time and I’m glad we can share it with all of you!

Secondly, can you believe it’s Monday already? Our weekend flew by. Just means it was a good one!

Jacob and I both have a busy week ahead at work, so I spent a bit of time prepping lunches, dinners and snacks for the week. One other area I’m looking to speed up? Breakfast.

Oats are a go to breakfast for me, specifically custard oats. The egg in there adds protein for staying power, extra volume and creaminess. Making custard oats only adds just a couple more minutes to the breakfast making process, but for those morning when I have zero extra minutes, I’ll use protein powder.

Normally I’m not big on protein powders, I’d rather get my nutrition from real, whole foods, but this definitely comes in handy. Instead of whisking the egg, then adding to the oats, here I just add in 2-3 tbsp on protein powder at the end and it’s ready!

I like the natural, no flavor here. A banana is almost always added to my oats for sweetness, which works perfectly with this unsweetened brown rice protein powder.

Not only do I get about 13 extra grams of protein, you have to add extra liquid in which means more –> VOLUME. I love volume when it comes to breakfast.

Are you a fan of adding protein powder to your oats? What’s your favorite type/brand?

Cran-Banan Almond Protein Oats
serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cup liquid (typically I use half water, half soymilk)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 3 tbsp protein powder
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • toppings: 1/2 sliced banana and 1 tbsp almond butter

Directions

  1. Add the liquid, oats, banana and sea salt to a small pot over medium heat. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring every so often.
  2. Stir in the protein powder, almond extract and cranberries. Allow to cook for another 2-3 minutes as it thickens some more.
  3. Pour into a bowl and add the toppings!

I love a good, warming bowl of oats in the morning. Don’t you?

Have a great Monday!

Heather

Looks good! I never used protein powder before. I’ll have to give it a try. It’s great for having foods like oatmeal, that way I get the good carbs and some protein. Thanks! I’ll have to check out the brand you got!

i add sunwarrior warrior blend (vanilla flavor) to my oats every day – it’s vegan and raw 🙂 it’s even better in smoothies

I have GOT to find a banana substitute for my oats. I want that volume/sweetness/thickness that everyone else has!

    1. Get Healthy with Heather says:

Not a baba fan? You can always throw in any other frozen fruit, it’ll add volume, just not as much creaminess as banana. Let me know what you find!

i seriously don’t know if i’ll ever be able to have “normal oats” after i tried your custard oats. i love the texture and staying power! i will every once in awhile put some protein powder in my oats if i’m running short on time. i mostly buy vanilla for a little added sweetness.

congrats again on your baby boy! 🙂

I love brown rice protein in my oats. I use Sunwarrior. I find whey in oats to be absolutely vile.

    1. Get Healthy with Heather says:

Sunwarrior is definitely one I like too, I just don’t like that you have to order it online.

I have never tried that kind of protein.. I wish all protein came in single serving packs so I could try a bunch without buying a whole tub!

    1. Get Healthy with Heather says:

That would be so nice and convenient!
