Why you’ll love these healthy burger bowls

High Protein Meal – Each serving contains 34 grams of protein, making these bowls perfect for meal prep and anyone looking for a satisfying dinner.

All The Burger Flavor Without The Bun – You still get all your favorite burger toppings and that classic burger-and-fries experience, but served over fresh romaine lettuce for a lighter option.

Perfect For Meal Prep – Prep the turkey, special burger sauce, and pickle de gallo at the beginning of the week for easy lunches and dinners.

Family Friendly – Everyone can build their own burger bowl with their favorite toppings, making this a dinner that works for the whole family.

Simple ingredients you’ll need

  • Sweet potatoes – Sweet potatoes create the perfect crispy fry topping for these burger bowls. You can peel them or leave the skin on for extra fiber and nutrients.
  • Arrowroot powder or cornstarch – This is the secret to crispy sweet potato fries! Either option works well to help the fries develop a golden, crunchy exterior.
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Avocado oil – I like using avocado oil because it has a high smoke point and a neutral flavor. Olive oil can also be used if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Lean ground turkey – I like using 93% lean ground turkey because it stays flavorful while still keeping the recipe lighter. Ground chicken works well, too.
  • Coconut aminos – Coconut aminos add a subtle savory flavor to the turkey. If you don’t have any on hand, low-sodium soy sauce or tamari can be substituted with a dash of maple syrup to add the natural sweetness you’d find in coconut aminos.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder – These simple seasonings add classic burger flavor without requiring extra prep work.
  • Romaine lettuce – Romaine provides a crisp, crunchy base for the bowls. Mixed greens, iceberg lettuce, or butter lettuce are all great options as well.
  • Grape tomatoes – Grape tomatoes add freshness and a juicy bite. Cherry tomatoes work perfectly, too, as would any diced juicy tomatoes.
  • Red onion – Thinly sliced red onions add crunch and a little bite. For a milder flavor, soak the slices in cold water for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Homemade special sauce – The homemade special sauce brings all the burger flavors together. It’s creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet – just like your favorite burger sauce! You can make it ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Homemade pickle de gallo – Think of pickle de gallo as pico de gallo’s pickle-loving cousin! Made with dill pickles, bell pepper, onion, jalapeño, garlic, and pickle juice, it adds a fresh, tangy crunch that makes these turkey burger bowls extra special. Adjust the jalapeño to your preferred spice level.

Variations

Add Cheese – Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top for a cheeseburger bowl version.

Add Avocado – Fresh avocado adds healthy fats and extra creaminess.

Make It Spicy – Increase the jalapeño or add hot sauce to the special sauce.

Swap The Protein – Ground chicken, lean ground beef, or even burger patties work well in place of turkey.

Storage & meal prep

Store the turkey, pickle de gallo, special sauce, and vegetables separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

For a healthy lunch meal prep option, portion everything except the lettuce and fries into containers. Add fresh lettuce and reheat the turkey and fries before serving.

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this build your own burger bowls recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Ground Turkey – Swap the ground turkey for ground chicken, lean ground beef, ground bison, or even plant-based crumbles. Any ground protein will work well with the burger-inspired flavors.

Sweet Potato Fries – Not a fan of sweet potatoes? Use regular potatoes, frozen fries, roasted potatoes, or even air fryer potato wedges instead.

Romaine Lettuce – Any fresh greens will work here. Try mixed greens, iceberg lettuce, butter lettuce, spinach, or chopped kale.

Grape Tomatoes – Cherry tomatoes, diced Roma tomatoes, or even sliced cucumbers can be used in place of grape tomatoes.

Red Onion – White onion, sweet onion, pickled red onions, or green onions are all great alternatives.

Coconut Aminos – Tamari, soy sauce, or Worcestershire sauce can be used in place of coconut aminos for a similar savory flavor. Add a touch of maple syrup or honey to mimic the natural sweetness that comes from coconut aminos.

Pickle De Gallo – You can use diced pickles in place of pickle de gallo for a similar taste.

Make It Cheeseburger Style – Add shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled feta, pepper jack, or your favorite cheese for a cheeseburger bowl variation.

Add Extra Toppings – Sliced avocado, bacon, sautéed mushrooms, extra pickles, hot sauce, or a fried egg are all delicious additions that make these bowls your own!
