6 Ingredient Chocolate Trail Mix Clusters Recipe

When I first started making these chocolte trail mix clusters years ago it was because I had an abundance of storebought trail mix on hand. After I made them once, my mind started thinking about all the posibilities of customizing it to my liking.

That’s how this recipe was born, and 12 years later we still love it and make it on repeat!

Because this recipe makes such a large batch (about 25 clusters depending on the size) I always feel like I’m getting a lot out of the small amount of prep time.

Simple steps – I love recipes like this because they’re so easy I can have my kids make it! Once your chocolate is melted, you’re simply mixing, scooping, and chilling.

Customizable trail mix – You could of course use storebought trail mix, but the great thing about making your own is that you can control the ingredients that go into it!

Healthy treats – Biting into a chocolate cluster is like having candy bars at home. They are delicious but made better for you!

How to make trail mix clusters

Step 1: Start by melting your chocolate in the microwave in increments or over a double boiler. To create a double boiler fill a small pot with 2 inches of water.  Place a large glass bowl over it.  Make sure the bowl does not touch the water.  Place on the stove over medium heat.  Add the chocolate and stir as it melts.

Step 2: Once melted, add all the remaining ingredients to the melted chocolate and mix well.

How to make trail mix clusters

Step 3: On wax paper or parchment paper, scoop and drop about 3-4 tbsp of the mixture.  Repeat until no more remains. Add a sprinkle of sea salt to them if you’d like. Allow the clusters to harden at room temperature, or place them in the fridge or freezer to cool faster. Makes about 25 clusters.

How to store

To store your trail mix clusters, add to an airtight container or sealable silicone or plastic bag.

Store the clusters at room temperature or in the fridge.

You can also freeze them for longer term storage for up to 6 months!

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this chocolate treat recipe. 

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Dark chocolate chips – Use your favorite type of chocolate here. You could also experiment with white chocoalte, or adding mix ins into your melted chocolate like peanut butter or almond butter!

Raisin – Other dried fruits like dried cranberries, dried currants, or dried diced apricots would be delicious.

Peanuts and almonds – Feel free to swap and use any type of nuts you have on hand here!

Sunflower seeds – Other seeds like pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, and flax seeds are great options too.

Shredded coconut – Bigger pieces of coconut work in place of shredded coconut, I would suggest giving it a chop before adding so that you aren’t left with large pieces that don’t mix in well to the clusters.
