Zoe and I stepped into the kitchen and made chocolate covered dried fig bites together, and today we’re sharing the simple how-to recipe with you! These chocolate bites use naturally sweet homemade chocolate (we show you just how easy it really is to make), plus dried figs! Simple ingredients make a decadent treat. Let’s get into the kitchen!
When you hear chocolate covered, do you get excited? I always do. Covering a strawberry, an espresso bean, an almond… and whatever else you desire just elevates the food, am I right? That’s exactly what we’re doing with these chocolate covered dried figs.
Dried figs alone are delicious, but today we’re dicing them into bite size pieces, covering them in homemade naturally sweet chocolate, chilling them and making fruity chocolate bites!
Substitutes for dried figs
Don’t have dried figs? No problem! Here are some other delicious dried fruits to cover in chocolate. Just watch the ingredients to make sure they are just the dried fruit without added sugar.
- Dates
- Dried apricots
- Dried mango
- Dried stawberry
- Raisins (turn into a cluster)
- Dried blueberries (again, turn into a cluster)
- Dried pineapple
Alternates to homemade chocolate
In the recipe we’re making our own chocolate using my homemade dairy free + low sugar chocolate recipe, but you can of course use your favorite chocolate chip or bar as a substitute! You’ll simply melt your chocolate of choice, add the coconut oil and then you’re ready to cover dried fruit in chocolate!
Ingredients you’ll need for chocolate covered dried fig bites
Cacoa butter – this gives the chocolate smoothness, helps to form our chocolate and gives it bite (if you see cocoa butter it’s the same thing, so feel free to use that!)
Coconut oil – smooths the chocolate out for dipping
Cocoa powder – gives it the chocolate flavor!
Maple syrup – the touch of sweetness
Sea salt – just a pinch makes the flavors pop
Vanilla extract – subtle sweetness and flavor
Dried figs – our sweet, delicious and fruity filling!

Steps in making chocolate covered treats
- Begin by making your homemade melted chocolate by heating the cacao butter in the microwave for 2-3 minutes on high, until fully melted. Alternatively you could use a double boiler. Stir in the coconut oil, maple syrup, cocoa powder, sea salt and vanilla extract.
- Drop all the dried fig pieces into the metled chocolate. Stir to coat each piece fully. Use a fork to lift a dried fig piece out of the melted chocolate and place it on a parchment paper lined cutting board. Repeat with all fig pieces, making sure to have space between each piece.
- Chill in the fridge for 20-30 minutes until set! Keep bites in fridge and enjoy!
