As a self taught cook, I’ve failed a lot over the years. I’ve also had a ton of wins! My 10 tips I’m sharing today will help you become a better home cook. Enjoy cooking a bit more, make food taste better and feel confident in the kitchen.
I am not a professional chef. The closest I’ve come to a cooking class was a baking 101 class at the local community college. Which was a BLAST when I look back on that. We learned baking and frosting techniques and got to be creative.
But my actual breakfast, lunch and dinner making skills all came from practice. Learning at home. And LOTS of trial and error.
Over the past fews months there has been an uptick in cooking at home because of necessity. Many of us had to stay home and were forced to stock up and cook more. What a beautiful blessing we can look at that as!
If you aren’t comfortable cooking, it may not feel like a blessing. It can feel stressful and those feelings are valid. But the more we practice, the more we improve.
So let’s get into these tips!
10 Kitchen Tips
- PRACTICE and expect some flops.
- Go in with a recipe and a plan.
- Read the recipe fully before you even start.
- Set your mise en place – which is a french phrase for everything in its place.
- Try out some food prep.
- Use kitchen tools to your advantage.
- Try roasting your food, especially vegetables.
- Use salt!
- Use a sharp knife.
- Use a thermometer.
I elaborate on each of these points in today’s podcast episode, so be sure to listen below for an even deeper dive into each tip!
