Pro tips for homemade protein balls

  • If the dough is too dry: Add a teaspoon of milk or water at a time until it comes together.
  • If it’s too sticky: Add a little more oat flour or coconut flour.
  • Use room temperature nut butter for easier mixing.
  • Don’t skip the almond extract – it’s what gives that true birthday cake flavor.

How to store

Store your no bake energy bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

You can also freeze them for up to 4 months. I highly recommend making a double batch to keep a good stash in the freezer!

When you’d like to enjoy them, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw for a few minutes before eating.

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this birthday cake protein bites recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Vanilla whey protein powder – You can swap with a plant-based vanilla protein powder, though the texture may be slightly softer or drier depending on the brand. If using unflavored protein, add a little extra vanilla extract and sweetener.

Oat flour – Substitute with almond flour for a softer, more moist texture, or all-purpose flour (heat-treated) if not gluten-free. You can also blend rolled oats to make your own oat flour.

Coconut flour – Replace with additional oat flour (about 3-4 tbsp), since coconut flour is more absorbent. You can also use almond flour, but the mixture may be slightly softer.

Cashew butter – Swap with almond butter or creamy peanut butter for a stronger nutty flavor. Sunflower butter works well for a nut-free option.

Honey – Use maple syrup or agave nectar for a similar sweetness and texture.

Vanilla extract – You can use vanilla bean paste for a stronger flavor.

Almond extract – If you don’t have it, you can leave it out, but it does add that classic birthday cake flavor. A tiny bit of butter extract is a good alternative.

Sprinkles – Swap with mini white chocolate chips, mini chocolate chips, or leave them out for a lower sugar option. Use naturally colored sprinkles if preferred.
