My kids and I love this fluffy, creamy, and oh-so-good smoothie, and you will too! The secret ingredient for uber creaminess is the avocado!
Why you’ll love this peanut butter avocado banana smoothie
It tastes like dessert – Anytime chocolate is involved I feel like I’m having dessert. With this smoothie, you get all the chocolaty goodness, but with extra nourishment in there!
Kid-approved – A few of my kids aren’t the biggest avocado fans, but they sure love this smoothie! No one can tell that there is any avocado involved in this creamy, dreamy drink – the chocolate and peanut butter flavor are what you taste!
Customizable – If you need them, there are lots of swaps listed below so that you can customize this smoothie to your preferences and use what you have on hand.
Before we dive into the easy delicious smoothie recipe, I’m answering a few questions I’ve received about it below!
Can you make it without the avocado?
I understand that not everyone is an avocado flavor fan. Avocado toast… avocado smoothie… you either love it, or you don’t. I get it!
You may be wondering if you can make this smoothie without avocado and the answer is yes, of course!
However, give it a try first. It leaves you with such a creamy texture with no flavor of the avocado.
Plus it’s such a healthy smoothie recipe!
Can you make it without the banana?
Yes, you can make it without the banana!
You’d lose some creaminess and sweetness, so I’d suggest adding more maple syrup or agave syrup for a sweeter smoothie.

Substitutions
Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this avocado peanut butter smoothie recipe.
If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!
Avocado – A little bit of avocado chunks is a great way to add healthy fats – an alternative would be to increase the nut butter used and add a handful of spinach in.
Banana – A ripe banana without large black spots will help to sweeten your smoothie without too much banana flavor. You can omit the banana for a thinner smoothie. You can replace the sweetness with a tablespoon of honey or extra maple syrup. Try frozen peaches for a different flavor but still give you that creamy consistency.
Milk options – I love using unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk, or cashew milk, but a regular cup of milk, soy milk, or oat milk all work in this recipe!
Natural peanut butter – An alternative to peanut butter would be almond butter or sunflower seed butter. To go with whole seeds instead, you could add hemp seeds, flaxseed, or chia seeds. You can also reduce the high amount of fat (between the avocado and peanut butter) and use peanut butter powder in place of PB.
Cocoa powder – Try cacao powder for a great alternative.
Maple syrup –To satisfy your sweet tooth, try honey or dates instead of maple syrup as your natural sweetener.
Want more protein in this perfect breakfast smoothie?
To make this smoothie a great source of protein, add a scoop of your favorite chocolate protein powder that gives you around 20 grams of protein. A whey protein powder or plant-based protein powder is an awesome addition!
If your protein powder is sweetened, you can reduce or omit the maple syrup. If the amount of liquid sweetener is not reduced, the smoothie will be extra sweet.
As you blend the smoothie, you can taste and always add more sweetener if needed.
Smoothies make the perfect quick breakfast because they blend up and are ready to go in just a few minutes. You can double the recipe and feed more people in less time!
How to make this into a smoothie bowl
Here’s how to make thicker smoothies that you can then turn into a smoothie bowl!
You’ll start by reducing your liquid in half. Less liquid is needed to help thicken it.
Ensure that you are using a high-speed blender so that it’s able to blend well with less liquid.
Use a frozen banana to help thicken it as well.
As you are blending your thicker smoothie if it gets stuck and isn’t able to blend, add 1-2 tablespoons of almond milk or coconut milk to keep the blending going.
If you love how thick your smoothie bowl ends up, a perfect dessert to try is my healthy chocolate pudding recipe!

This is a good smoothie! I made with a frozen banana and only used one tbsp of cocoa and no ice. The only thing I would do differently would be to decrease the sweetener or omit altogether. Or maybe add a date for natural sweetness. Thank you for the recipe.
Thanks, Ri, love that you shared how you mixed it up! Glad it was a hit!
The creamiest smoothie! My kids could not tell there was avocado – love that I’m giving them extra nutrients in a smoothie! Thanks for this yummy recipe.
