Adding vegetables into a smoothie is like second nature to me now. But it wasn’t always that way.

I eased into adding a handful of spinach into a smoothie with my peanut butter banana spinach smoothie (a great beginner green smoothie recipe!) and then started experimenting with different flavors and even different vegetables (hello cauliflower rice in my blackberry smoothie!).

When the base of your smoothie is a winner, you cannot taste the greens. That’s exactly what we’re doing with this cookie dough shake!

With a boost of protein, lots of healthy fats, fiber, and of course, the flavor of chocolate chip cookies, this healthy smoothie is one to satisfy your sweet tooth while also being extra filling.

Can you make this into a cookie dough smoothie bowl?

You can turn any smoothie into a smoothie bowl by thickening it in a couple of different ways.

The easiest way is to reduce the liquid. Cut it down by ⅓-1/2 and only add as much milk as you need to get the smoothie blended (you want it thick like cookie dough ice cream).

You can also add ice, milk frozen in ice cube trays, or increase the frozen banana to help thicken it as well.

Lastly, since chia seeds are added in, if you allow the smoothie to sit for 5-10 minutes in the fridge or freezer after blending, it will thicken more from the chia seeds as well.

Once your super thick smoothie is poured into a bowl, top it with cacao nibs, raw oats, fresh fruit, coconut flakes, or whatever your favorite smoothie bowl toppings are!

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this chocolate chip cookie dough protein shake recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Dairy-free milk – Almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, or regular cow’s milk will work here!

Fresh spinach – Frozen spinach can be used to substitute fresh. Reduce the amount by at least ½.

Frozen banana – You can use fresh banana in place of frozen. You’ll want to add a few ice cubes if you opt to use fresh.

Oats – Quick oats or instant oats work in place of rolled oats!

Cashew butter – When you mix cashew butter with mini chocolate chips it tastes like real cookie dough. It helps to give the cookie flavor to this smoothie. Of course, you can replace it with peanut butter, almond butter, or your favorite nut or seed butter too!

Chia seed – Flaxseed or hemp hearts are great alternatives to replace the chia seed.

Vanilla protein powder – In place of a sweetened vanilla protein powder, you can also use unsweetened protein powder. If you do, you’ll want to add a little maple syrup or a couple of dates to replace the sweetness. Chocolate protein powder would also be delicious!
