4 Ingredient Healthy Sweet Potato Frosting – Vegan!

I love making desserts and treats extra nourishing, and this sweet potato frosting is no different! Sweet potatoes are packed with fiber, potassium, and beta-carotene and are a great way to add more nourishment to your goodies.

If you love sweet potatoes too, be sure to also try my sweet potato ice cream!

One question I get often about this recipe is whether it has a strong sweet potato flavor, and the answer is yes.

If you aren’t a sweet potato fan, listen up though! My husband despises sweet potatoes, and he ate and enjoyed many chocolate cupcakes topped with this frosting.

If you’re wary, just give it a try! And if you have someone in your houeshold that also doesn’t like sweet potatoes, just make and enjoy it and see what happens.

Your sweet potato hater may also love this frosting like mine did too.

Why you’ll love this beautiful color frosting recipe

Creamy texture – Once your sweet potatoes are baked until soft in the center, then blended with the few other ingredients, you’re left with the most creamy sweet potato puree that transforms into a frosting when chilled. It pipes out of piping bags beautifully.

Naturally bright orange – To get that bright orange color, be sure to use orange sweet potatoes. You could also use purple sweet potatoes for a fabulous purple color, or white sweet potatoes for a more neutral color. To give it a brown color and chocolate flavor, add a little cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder when blending.

Better ingredients – Traditional frosting is mainly butter and powdered sugar. This healthy frosting is very different than that and is so nourishing! It’s lowered in sugar, and made with natural sweeteners plus the sweetness from sweet potato purée.

Step 2: After the sweet potato frosting has chilled and becomes firmer, it is ready to use! Spread onto almond flour chocolate cupcakes, chocolate cake, or any dessert that needs a healthy frosting. You can use a piping bag here too!

NOTE – If you don’t have already cooked sweet potato here’s how to prep them. Pierce 2-3 sweet potatoes a few times with a fork and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake in a 400-degree F oven for 40-50 minutes, or until a knife can easily poke through the center. After the sweet potato cools slightly, cut it in half, and then mash the tender orange flesh from the sweet potato for the recipe!

What to serve this frosting with

Originally I tested and created many sweet potato frosting recipes with my chocolate almond flour cupcakes, and settled on this awesome version.

I definitely suggest trying that cupcake recipe, but it would pair beautifully with many other desserts. Here are more favorite baked goods to try out!

How to store

Because of the coconut oil content, this frosting is best kept in an airtight container in the fridge chilled.

Once you frost cupcakes or cake, you can definitely leave it out at room temperature to be enjoyed. However, for longer-term storage, keep it in the fridge for up to 7 days.

Because this frosting is bright orange it screams Halloween for me. If you want a fun Halloween cupcake topper, try this date cockroach!

To make a cockroach out of a date and chocolate, add a pitted date for the body, a single chocolate chip for the head, and pipe melted semi-sweet chocolate chips for the legs and antenna.

Try making a spider cupcake topper too! 🕷️

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this starchy sweet potato frosting recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Orange sweet potato – You can use any type of large sweet potato for this frosting recipe. Whatever color the flesh of your sweet potato is, that is the color that your frosting will be. I would not suggest using butternut squash or pumpkin puree because they have a higher water content.

Coconut oil – Coconut oil is solid when chilled, which helps you to get the texture you need for this recipe. You could use unsalted butter as an alternative, however it has a stronger flavor than coconut oil. I do not suggest liquid oils like avocado or olive oil.

Maple syrup – Other liquid sweeteners like honey or agave nectar are good alternatives!

Vanilla extract – Want to change up the flavor a bit? Use a different extract like peppermint or orange!
