Dragon Fruit (Pitaya) and Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

Dragon fruit, also called pitaya or strawberry pear, is a tropical fruit from Central America and Southern Mexico. It grows on cactus vines and the skin can be pink, red or yellow and looks scaly.

Like other fruits, dragon fruit is good for you too! It’s high in fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, and lycopene too.

I love it for the mildy sweet and slightly acid flavor (like you’d get from kiwi), and the COLOR. I can’t get over the pink color, so pretty, right?

Using both frozen strawberries and dragon fruit were the perfect combination. The natural sweetness from the fruits paired really well together.

Why you’ll love this dragon fruit smoothie recipe

Bright pink color – This is the ultimate girly smoothie right here! You just can’t get that bright gorgeous color with strawberries alone. Dragon fruit has a bright magenta-colored flesh that compliments the strawberries, yogurt, and milk, leaving you with a pink that will brighten up any morning.

Uses only frozen fruit – When I’m getting to the point in the week where I need to go grocery shopping again, my fresh fruit supply begins to dwindle away. That is when I begin to rely on frozen fruit more. I love that this recipe only utilizes frozen fruit for that reason. If you do happen to have fresh dragon fruit or strawberries on hand, you can absolutely use those! Simply add ice to help thicken your smoothie.

Homemade goodness – This vibrant tropical smoothie reminds me of one I’d buy at a smoothie shop, but instead we’re making it at home knowing exactly what is going into it. When you go for a homemade smoothie, you get to control exactly what is added in. You can easily adjust the sweetness, add more or less protein, and even add more fiber if you’re looking for that too! A scoop of chia seeds, hemp seeds, or flaxseed are all good options to bump up the fiber content.

Where can you find pitaya?

Pitaya (dragon fruit) can located in the frozen section of grocery stores. You’ll want to look at where the frozen fruits are kept to find the frozen dragon fruit cubes.

Not all grocery stores will carry it, but I can always easily find it at Target!

You can find fresh pitaya in the produce section located near tropical fruit like mangoes, kiwi, and coconut.

You may find red-flesh dragon fruit (what we used here), white dragon fruit, or yellow dragon fruit.

How to make smoothie bowls

To turn your smoothie into a dragon fruit smoothie bowl you’ll just need to adjust the liquid to have a thicker texture. Start by reducing the milk by half, and only adding a little milk at a time to get the smoothie moving.

Once your thick pink pitaya smoothie is fully blended up, pour it into a bowl and top it with all kinds of delicious toppings like you would with an Acai bowl!

Here are the favorites we love on our smoothie bowls:

  • cacao nibs
  • unsweetened shredded coconut
  • fresh sliced strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
  • hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds
  • more tropical flavors like sliced mango and pineapple chunks

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this pitaya smoothie recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Almond milk – You can use your favorite plant-based milk here – try coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or hemp milk. For a less creamy option, use coconut water. If you can tolerate dairy milk, you can use that as well.

Plain Greek yogurt – Plain whole milk yogurt or kefir are great alternatives to Greek yogurt for this smoothie. You can also use vanilla yogurt which would add a bit more sweetness as well. To keep this recipe dairy free, use an almond milk yogurt.

Vanilla protein powder – I tend to use a whey protein powder, but a plant-based option will work too! You can also opt to use an unsweetened protein powder. If you do that, you may want to add a little maple syrup if you’d like additional sweetness.
