Why some people get the “ick” about egg whites in smoothies

Do you get the ick when you think about eating raw egg whites? Here are some common worries and fixes.

  • Food-safety worries (aka “raw eggs”)
Many folks picture cracking a raw egg into the blender. That is risky.
The solution: use pasteurized liquid egg whites in a carton, which are heat-treated for safety and labeled as safe to drink.
  • Foamy texture
Egg whites whip like meringue in a high-speed blender, which can feel airy or bubbly.
Fix: Blend on low just until smooth, add a creamy ingredient (½ banana, a few ice cubes, or 1–2 tbsp nut butter), and pour immediately.
  • Eggy smell/taste
Some brands have a faint sulfur note.
Fix: Use strong, fresh flavors (berries, cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, a splash of lemon juice).
  • Egg allergy/sensitivity
If eggs don’t agree with you, skip them. Great alternatives: Greek yogurt, silken tofu, collagen, or plant-based protein.

Serving suggestions

Post-workout shake – Drink within 30–60 minutes after exercise to maximize muscle recovery. It’s a great source of protein and carbohydrates!

Breakfast smoothie – Pair with whole-grain toast or oatmeal for a complete meal.

Dessert alternative – Add a drizzle of natural peanut butter, almond butter, or chocolate syrup for a sweet treat shake.

How to Store

This smoothie is best enjoyed fresh, but if you need to store it:

  • Fridge: Store in an airtight container or jar for up to 24 hours. Shake well before drinking.
  • Freezer: Pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Blend frozen cubes with a splash of almond milk when ready to serve.
  • Popsicles: Pour leftovers into popsicle molds for an after-school snack that still delivers protein.

Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments

Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this better nutrition egg white smoothie recipe.

If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!

Almond milk – Swap with oat milk, coconut milk, or dairy milk. For an extra fruity flavor, swap your milk alternative for orange juice.

Liquid egg whites – Use pasteurized whole eggs for extra richness or an egg white powder if you prefer. You can also swap the egg whites for your favorite types of protein powder – like whey or a plant-based option.

Berries – Try frozen raspberries, cherries, or mango for a flavor twist.

Banana – Replace with avocado for creaminess without added sweetness.
