How to store
Leftover steak fajita filling stores well and can be prepped in advance to make dinnertime a breeze. Once cooled to room temperature, add to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
To reheat leftovers, you can warm in a large skillet, heat in the oven, an air fryer, or in the microwave until warmed through.
I also love to chop leftover fajita steak and veggies into small pieces and add them to my quesadillas or breakfast omelets. You could turn it into a fajita beef salad or add it to a piece of toast with melted cheese for a steak fajita melt. There are so many ways to use leftover fajitas!
Recipe success tips
- Since finding stir-fry beef, my steak fajita making has been taken to a whole new level of simplicity. If your grocery store doesn’t carry stir fry beef, but there is a butch counter, ask if they will slice a sirloin steak into stir fry beef for you. It will save you prep time!
- Pre-slicing bell pepper and onion ahead of time can also make this meal quicker to prep.
- If you make homemade taco and fajita seasoning (which I highly recommend!), the marinade is a snap to put together. If you don’t have the mix, I also listed the individual seasonings in the notes below the recipe.
Substitutions, optional variations & dietary adjustments
Below you’ll find a list of substitutions that will work well in this easy steak fajitas recipe.
If you try something different out, please leave a comment below letting us all know how it turned out!
Stir-fry beef – You can use almost any cut of beef as long as you slice it thin before adding it to the marinade. You can also make this recipe with other proteins! Try chicken fajitas, or shrimp fajitas, or make it vegetarian by loading up on the fajita veggies and adding refried beans into your fajitas tacos.
Bell pepper – Use a colorful mix of green bell peppers, yellow bell pepper, and red bell pepper, or give your meal a little heat by adding spicy peppers! Not a bell pepper fan? Try using zucchini instead.
Onion – Yellow onion and red onions are great options here. For a milder onion flavor, use green onions or leeks.
Lime juice – If you don’t have bottled or fresh lime juice available, lemon is a great alternative!
Avocado oil – Extra virgin olive oil is a good substitute for avocado oil.
Taco and fajita seasoning mix – You can use store-bought taco seasoning in place of homemade. If neither of those is an option, add a little chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper as your seasoning mix.
